Job Title: Controls Engineer – Chillers

Type of Role: Direct Hire (Full-Time, Hybrid)

Travel: Approximately 25%, including domestic and international travel

Pay Range: $159,000–$180,000/yr

POSITION OVERVIEW:

We are seeking an experienced Controls Engineer – Chillers to lead the design, development, integration, and optimization of control systems for centrifugal chillers and Modular Chiller Plant (MCP) solutions supporting data center applications throughout North America.

This position is responsible for developing and reviewing control logic, defining system architecture and control strategies, establishing equipment interfaces, and ensuring seamless integration across mechanical, electrical, and automation systems.

The ideal candidate has at least 7 years of controls engineering experience involving HVAC systems, centrifugal chillers, or industrial automation, with a strong preference for direct experience with Trane or Johnson Controls (JCI) centrifugal chiller systems.

This individual will work closely with customers, suppliers, engineering teams, and technology partners to develop advanced cooling solutions for mission-critical data center environments. The role involves supporting the entire engineering lifecycle, from initial concept development and technical proposals through detailed design, system integration, testing, commissioning, and continuous improvement.

The position also requires collaboration with engineering and business stakeholders in the United States and Japan to support the development of scalable, modular cooling technologies.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Develop, review, and optimize control logic for centrifugal chillers and Modular Chiller Plant (MCP) systems to ensure reliable, efficient, and scalable operation.
  • Design control system architectures and strategies involving temperature regulation, chilled-water flow, equipment sequencing, and energy optimization.
  • Develop and validate control interfaces between chillers, pumps, valves, auxiliary equipment, and supervisory systems.
  • Integrate chiller and plant controls with Building Management Systems (BMS) and Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) platforms.
  • Develop and review PLC/DDC control logic, sequences of operation, control diagrams, functional specifications, and system interface requirements.
  • Coordinate integration across mechanical, electrical, and controls engineering disciplines to ensure proper system functionality.
  • Define control system interfaces, technical requirements, and responsibility boundaries between internal engineering teams, suppliers, customers, and external partners.
  • Translate customer requirements into control system specifications, functional requirements, and engineering deliverables.
  • Support the development of electrical design calculations and analysis packages, including load flow, short-circuit analysis, protection coordination, arc flash, harmonics, and transient/dynamic performance.
  • Maintain engineering requirements traceability and ensure control system designs align with applicable specifications and project requirements.
  • Support technical proposals by defining control system scope, assumptions, architecture, equipment requirements, and proposed technical solutions.
  • Participate in control system design reviews, technical meetings, and customer discussions during pre-award and post-award project phases.
  • Coordinate with control system suppliers and equipment manufacturers to evaluate components, review designs, and resolve technical discrepancies.
  • Lead vendor design reviews and manage engineering deviations, technical issues, corrective actions, and design improvements through resolution.
  • Support system integration testing, factory testing, commissioning, startup, and site validation activities.
  • Troubleshoot control system malfunctions, integration issues, communication problems, and equipment performance deficiencies.
  • Collaborate with project management, engineering, manufacturing, procurement, and commissioning teams to ensure alignment on technical scope, schedules, and deliverables.
  • Support development of next-generation centrifugal chiller and modular cooling plant products for mission-critical data center applications.
  • Identify opportunities to improve control system performance, energy efficiency, reliability, standardization, and cost effectiveness.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies in industrial automation, advanced controls, data center cooling, and digital system integration.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams and business stakeholders in both the United States and Japan to support product development and project execution.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in control system design or engineering involving HVAC, centrifugal chillers, or industrial systems.
  • Strong understanding of PLC/DDC control systems, control logic, industrial automation, and system integration.
  • Experience developing or reviewing control strategies, sequences of operation, control diagrams, and functional specifications.
  • Knowledge of centrifugal chiller systems, HVAC controls, or comparable industrial control applications.
  • Ability to define and manage interfaces between mechanical, electrical, controls, and supervisory systems.
  • Experience integrating controls across multiple equipment manufacturers, engineering disciplines, and suppliers.
  • Ability to interpret and develop technical requirements, engineering specifications, and control system documentation.
  • Strong understanding of control system performance, troubleshooting, testing, and validation.
  • Experience coordinating with customers, vendors, suppliers, and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to resolve complex technical and integration issues.
  • Ability to support technical design reviews, engineering calculations, and project execution activities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to travel approximately 25%, including domestic and international travel.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without current or future employment visa sponsorship.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
