Contract - Senior Mechanical Engineer (based in New York City)

DESCRIPTION

At quip, we design and deliver delightful products and services to keep all mouths healthy.

We are looking for a Contract Senior Mechanical Engineer to help continue this mission. The ideal candidate will drive both new product development and continuous improvement efforts for existing products.

The ideal candidate will drive NPI, VA/VE, and CI efforts.

Hourly Rate: $65.00 - $80.00 USD

This range represents the anticipated base salary range for this position, in addition to competitive benefits and equity (as applicable). Compensation may vary based on location, experience, skills, and other factors.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • NPI (New Product Introduction)
    • Work closely with ID, Engineering, Marketing, and leadership to formulate new products.
    • Own the engineering of products from concept through mass production.
    • Develop product and technical requirements.
    • Drive optimization through analytical and experimental methods, including FEA and DOE.
    • Collaborate with Reliability & Quality Engineers and suppliers to identify and eliminate risks, validate designs, and prepare for mass production.
    • Lead design reviews and contribute to FMEA, test plans, and test procedures.
    • Lead research and outreach to build organizational competency in new technologies, materials, and finishes.
  • VAVE (Value Analysis/Value Engineering)
    • Evaluate all aspects of product design, manufacturing processes, and suppliers for cost reduction opportunities.
    • Guide initiatives through design, engineering, RFQ, validation, and mass production.
  • CI (Continuous Improvement)
    • Lead post-launch activities and conduct root cause analysis for product quality issues.
    • Review and improve existing product designs and manufacturing processes.
    • Participate in audits of suppliers' manufacturing and quality systems.
  • General Responsibilities
    • Act as technical lead to drive projects and report progress.
    • Produce documentation such as presentations, drawings, test reports, and procedures.
    • Travel internationally as needed to work with suppliers.
    • Attend evening calls with teams and suppliers in Asia (typically 2 nights per week).

REQUIREMENTS

  • 6+ years of experience in Design Engineering, focusing on high-volume electronic consumer products.
  • Experience working with overseas suppliers and contract manufacturers.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks, including surfacing, top-down modeling, simulation, and drafting.
  • Experience with high cavitation injection molding, 2K molding, sheet metal forming, and machining.
  • Deep knowledge of materials, processes, electronics, and manufacturing methods.
  • Ability to analyze high-volume data for engineering decisions.
  • Experience consulting with subject matter experts and referencing industry standards.
  • Proficiency in creating prototypes using outsourced and in-house methods.
  • Experience in risk assessment, design validation, and DFM with suppliers.
  • Knowledge of GD&T and tolerance stack analysis.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and project management skills.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (preferred).

NICE TO HAVES

  • Experience with motors, magnets, moisture ingress protection, CNC, flow/forming/spinning processes, finishing techniques.
