Job summary

Chico State Enterprises, through North State Public Radio (NSPR) in Chico, CA, seeks a continuity host for part-time, hourly on-air duties. The role involves creating and announcing music, arts and entertainment content, underwriting and promotional materials, and other programming tasks with strong speaking and editorial skills.

Responsibilities include live or recorded hosting, script delivery, content research, and collaboration with the team.

Qualifications

  • Experience in journalism, communications, music, or a related field preferred.
  • At least one year of experience in radio or television, including voicing, writing, editing, and production.
  • Familiarity with public radio programming standards and values.
  • Experience with broadcast traffic software and workflows.
  • Experience with audio editing software such as Adobe Audition and ENCO/DAD is preferred.

  • Announce and record promotional breaks for broadcast as scheduled or needed.
  • Research and prepare engaging listener-focused content and review scripts before on-air shifts.

  • Assist with traffic scheduling of underwriting, marketing, branding, and spots.
  • Operate independently with routine check-ins and final editorial review.
  • Backfill other content roles under direction of leadership.
  • Participate in fundraising across platforms.
  • Adhere to NPR standards of journalism.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

The continuity hostis responsible forcreating and announcing on-air content, which may include music,artsand entertainment programming, underwriting and promotional material, as well as other matters of interest. Key responsibilities include writing and delivering broadcast scripts, preparing content, traffic scheduling, and performing other programming tasks, including audio production. This role requires strong speaking and critical thinking skills, effective time management, and awareness of news and current events.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
  • Host live and/or pre-recorded programs or shifts that meet the expectations of media organization leadership.
  • Announce and record promotional breaks for broadcast, as scheduled or needed.
  • Research and prepare engaging, listener-focused content, and review prepared scripts and updates in advance of on-air shifts.
  • Assistwith programming and production, including recording fund drive and image spots, as well as library maintenance.
  • Assistwith the traffic scheduling of underwriting, marketing,branding,and promotional spots within local broadcast breaks.
  • Operate independently and collaboratively, subject to routine check-ins and final editorial review.
  • Backfill other content roles at the strategic direction of media organization leadership. For example, a host may also learn the skills and duties of another host, anchor, producer, or digital media coordinator.
  • Participate in fundraising across all platforms.
  • Adhere to NPR’s standards of journalism.
Preferred:
  • Experience injournalism, communications, music,a related field, or abachelor’sdegree.
  • At least one year of experience in radio or television, including voicing, writing, editing, and production skills. Previouson-air experience is preferred.
  • Familiarity with public radio programming standards and values.
  • Familiarity with broadcast traffic software and workflows.
  • Experience with audio editing software, such as Adobe Audition, as well as with ENCO/DAD and/or Audio over IP, is preferred.

  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required for this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work environment:
  • The noise level in the work environment is typically below 70 dBA.
