Job summary

City of Chicago is seeking a Content Manager within the Department of Technology & Innovation to support its digital platforming initiatives. You will help develop a consistent brand identity and deliver engaging content for residents, businesses, and visitors.

Under supervision, you will translate data-driven insights into compelling content, collaborate across City teams, and ensure accessibility and readability in line with city standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in English or a directly related field plus two years of content research experience.
  • Alternative: six years of content delivery experience; or an Associate's with four years; or Master’s with one year.
  • Experience in developing brand-aligned, accessible content for public sector audiences.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzes content performance and uses data to guide content strategy.
  • Designs high-impact content for residents, visitors, and businesses.
  • Participates in editorial planning and topic finalization for calendars.
  • Collaborates with project teams to align content with city goals.
  • Creates multimedia content to raise awareness of City programs and services.
  • Leads timely creation and delivery of engaging content.
  • Sources research and data across City departments for content development.
  • Forecasts performance to inform future content capacity and coverage.
  • Updates content from other departments to stay current.
  • Develops change initiatives to keep teams and content up to date.
  • Applies City content standards including accessibility and plain language guidelines.
  • Supports improvements to content operations and workflows.

Content Manager

Starting Salary: $75,336

This position is open to the public and all current City employees covered under the City's collective bargaining agreement with AMERICAN FEDERATION OF STATE, COUNTY, AND MUNICIPAL EMPLOYEES (AFSCME) - BARGAINING UNIT 1, 3, 4 & 5. Only employees in City job titles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid.

Under supervision, assists in the development of a consistent brand identity for the City's technology platform, and performs related duties as required.

This class is assigned to the City's Design Information Technology Job Family, which consists of design specialists who simplify the design and makeup of hardware, software devices, and user interfaces for products.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Analyzes content performance and uses data to assist in the direction of content strategy
  • Designs new types of high-impact content to meet the evolving needs of residents, visitors, and businesses
  • Participates in the collaborative content planning process, including brainstorming, refinement, and finalization of content topics for editorial calendars
  • Collaborates with project teams to ensure content plans align with departmental and citywide goals
  • Uses information such as metrics and statistics to create multimedia content that raises awareness of City programs and services
  • Leads the on-time creation and delivery of high-quality and engaging content to meet the needs of target audiences
  • Works with colleagues across Digital and Web Services and City departments to source and contextualize relevant research and data for content development
  • Forecasts content performance to collaboratively inform longer-view decisions on team capacity and the breadth and depth of content coverage
  • Curates and updates content originating from other City departments to keep public information accurate and current
  • Works to collaboratively formulate and execute change initiatives that will keep teams, systems, and content up to date
  • Applies established City content standards, including accessibility and plain language guidelines, and helps evaluate and improve content usability and readability across formats and platforms
  • Supports improvements to content operations and workflows that align with day-to-day business needs

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training, and Experience
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in English or a directly related field, plus two (2) years of work experience in research content delivery or technology-related content

Should the above criteria not be fulfilled, the following options are acceptable:

  • Six (6) years of work experience in research content delivery or technology-related content
  • Graduation from an accredited college with an Associate's degree in English or a directly related field, plus four (4) years of work experience in research content delivery or technology-related content
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's degree or higher in English or a directly related field, plus one (1) year of work experience in research content delivery or technology-related content
