Job summary

The Kansas City Jewish Chronicle, published by Jewish Federation of Kansas City, is evolving from a traditional newspaper into a contemporary Jewish magazine. The Content Specialist will identify stories, conduct interviews, write and edit content, and support the production of the monthly magazine.

This exempt, deadline-driven role thrives on curiosity about people and community, and collaborates with editors and designers to deliver timely, engaging content across print and digital platforms.

Qualifications

• 1–3 years of experience in journalism, communications, content creation, marketing, publishing or a related field; equivalent experience will be considered.
• Strong writing, editing, proofreading and interviewing skills.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Strong organizational and project-management abilities, with the ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
• Familiarity with social media platforms and digital content creation.
• Basic understanding of photography, visual storytelling and digital publishing preferred.
• Knowledge of the Kansas City community and/or Jewish communal life is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Write and edit a variety of content, including profiles, community stories, short features, department pieces, news briefs, event coverage and digital content.
• Conduct interviews, research story topics and gather information from community members, leaders, experts and other sources.
• Develop headlines, captions, introductions, social media copy and other supporting content.
• Repurpose magazine content for the website, newsletters and social media while maintaining a consistent Chronicle voice.
• Build relationships with community organizations, leaders, volunteers and members to identify story ideas and content opportunities.
• Attend community events and programs to gather information, conduct interviews and identify potential stories.
• Support the team in executing the editorial calendar, story assignments and production schedule.
• Proofread and fact-check content for accuracy, grammar, spelling and consistency.
• Work with designers to ensure copy, captions, headlines, photos and other editorial elements are delivered on time and prepared for publication.
• Assist with final proofing and quality control for each issue.
