Job summary

Qualifications

  • BA/BS in communications/marine science/Spanish or equivalent education and experience
  • Advanced written English (and Spanish) copy/edits
  • 2–3 years written or oral science communication experience
  • Ability to translate complex science for the general public on digital channels
  • Ability to write in a warm, brand-consistent tone across channels
  • Proficiency with enterprise software, CMS, ESP, and marketing automation tools
  • Knowledge of web writing, UX, IA, and SEO best practices
  • Ability to review emails for brevity, grammar, and clarity
  • Strong time management, multi-tasking, and collaboration skills
  • Cultural fluency in Spanish-speaking contexts; bilingual proficiency required

Job description

Job Summary:

Under general supervision, write and edit copy, build out webpages, produce emails, create social content (including videos), send SMS messages, and coordinate review for content on a variety of channels. Assist in the development and delivery of engaging digital content while ensuring consistent user journeys across platforms. Respond sensitively to breaking news and rapidly developing conversations that can spread quickly (i.e., "go viral") on social media without warning. Perform other duties as required. This position plays a key role in executing the Aquarium's content strategy across all channels: email marketing, websites, social media, SMS, print publications, and multi-platform advertising campaigns.

*Bilingual Position: Core activities and/or time allocation may change slightly based on departmental workplan and bilingual offerings as it supports the Aquarium's strategic plan and will be required to perform some core activities in both English and Spanish as assigned.

Candidates will be required to complete a language proficiency test assessment for Spanish if moved into the interview process.

Core Activities:
  • Draft original and assigned copy including marketing and marine science content for web stories, marketing emails and e-newsletter blurbs, SMS messages and social media posts in accordance with Aquarium brand guidelines.
  • Edit content for understandability, grammar, and style in accordance with Aquarium brand guidelines including incorporating content feedback.
  • Craft responses to questions and comments in social media feeds, in direct messages, and on travel review sites and forums on their own and collaboratively with a variety of folks across the organization.
  • Post responses, conduct follow-up, and elevate as needed.
  • Post content on social channels using social media management tool and native social platforms.
  • Manage tasks in project management software.
  • Build emails using email service provider and extract email lists from database.
  • Conduct email test sends and gather and implement content feedback.
  • Generate reports on email and social performance.
  • Use content management systems (CMS) to implement requested content updates on website in English and Spanish. Build new pages as needed.
  • Conduct user acceptance testing of new website features.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities (KSAs):
  • BA/BS in communications/marine science/Spanish, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Ability to ideate, write, edit, and proofread at an advanced level in English
  • 2-3 years written or oral science communication experience
  • Ability to research and communicate complex scientific concepts in an accurate, engaging, and understandable way for the general public on digital channels
  • Ability to write in a warm and engaging tone that matches Monterey Bay Aquarium's brand voice and social media style
  • Ability to use good judgment, care and discretion when responding to sensitive topics in a high-visibility social media landscape, following Aquarium social care standards and protocols
  • Ability to work in enterprise software and on social media platforms. CMS, ESP, and marketing automation software experience a plus
  • Working knowledge of writing for the web, UX best practices, information architecture and SEO practices
  • Ability to ensure email email messages are properly constructed to adhere to industry best practices; review messages for brevity while proofreading all emails for clarity, grammar, and spelling
  • Proven ability to prioritize, follow through, multi-task, pay attention to details, work within tight deadlines and manage time well
  • Show initiative, flexibility, and creativity
  • Ability to both work independently and to collaborate effectively on multidisciplinary creative team
  • Ability to work within, and maintain Monterey Bay Aquarium's Core Values
  • Advanced Bilingual (English/Spanish) spoken and written proficiency required
  • Ability to ideate, write, edit, and proofread at an advanced level in English and Spanish
  • Culturally fluent in Spanish-speaking cultures required; specifically, ability to understand cultural implications tied to language use in the above uses and contribute to a cross-channel content strategy based on the needs of the audience
  • Ability to offer ideas during ideation and development that reflect best practices in culturally responsive techniques
  • Ability to stay informed on the latest science, research, and culturally responsive strategies with respect to connecting to Spanish-speaking audiences locally, across California, and worldwide.

Annual Compensation Range:

$70,304 - $76,000 USD annually. Starting rate will vary based on previous experience and relevant skills/knowledge set.
