Job summary

Job description

Job Overview

The Driver will operate a container delivery truck and ancillary equipment on an assigned route to service customers by delivering and removing solid waste dumpster containers in a safe and efficient manner. They will also deliver the collected solid waste to the disposal site.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate the container delivery truck and on‑board hydraulic systems to deliver and remove solid waste dumpster containers.
  • Complete pre‑trip and post‑trip safety lane inspections and reports, daily truck report, route sheets and other documentation requested by the supervisor.
  • Communicate vehicle mechanical problems to the mechanic and supervisor immediately.
  • Operate the truck and equipment using prescribed techniques to eliminate driver‑induced mechanical failures.
  • Maintain route quality standards as predetermined by management.
  • Keep inventory on the yard in an orderly manner.
  • Position containers at customer location to minimize or eliminate potential hazards.
  • Ensure containers without lids are covered during transport.
  • Follow all safety standards, equipment checks and precautions in performance of all duties.
  • Comply with all federal, provincial, local and company rules on safety and vehicle operation.
  • Maintain a clean vehicle by cleaning the cab interior and exterior of the vehicle.
  • Conform in all respects with applicable federal, provincial and local laws, regulations, ordinances and orders and with all company policies, procedures and directives from supervisors.
  • Ensure that all required personal protective equipment is worn at all times (gloves, reflective vest, safety glasses, work boots, etc.).
  • Report all accidents or incidents to supervisor(s) immediately.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor, manner and appearance at all times when meeting customers or the general public on the route or in uniform.
  • Maintain accurate records of services performed.
  • Work closely with the supervisor to improve routing efficiencies.
  • May be required to work overtime.
  • Attend safety and branch meetings.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required or requested by management.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) desired.
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • Minimum of one year commercial truck driving experience or CDL school certificate.
  • Meet relevant criteria for safety‑sensitive functions according to company standards.
  • Demonstrate the ability to safely drive the truck and operate the equipment.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to read, write and comprehend associated documents and maps.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Flexibility to accept and adapt to change and continuously seek improvement.
  • Ability to exert muscle force to lift, push, pull or carry objects up to 50 pounds repeatedly with proper lifting techniques.
  • Ability to coordinate two or more limbs while sitting or standing.
  • Ability to follow all company safety policies and procedures.
Physical and Mental Demands
  • Ability to stand, walk, use hands and fingers, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, climb, balance and smell.
  • Superior visual requirements including close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus in tight and high‑traffic areas.
  • Regular lifting or moving of up to 25 pounds, frequent lifting or moving of up to 50 pounds and occasionally lifting or moving up to 100 pounds, and occasionally moving or pushing up to 300 pounds.
  • Driving requires sitting for 75% of the time.
  • Ability to work in usually loud conditions.
Working Conditions
  • Frequently exposed to loud noise, humidity, rain or storms, high temperatures and extreme cold (seasonal), moving mechanical parts, vibration, toxic and caustic chemicals, fumes and airborne particles.
  • Work in an outdoor environment 100% of the time.
  • Works routes away from branch on a continuous basis throughout the day.
  • Occasionally work in high precarious places.
  • Work in motor vehicle traffic conditions constantly.
  • Environment is usually loud.
