Job description

Title: Consumer Lending Intern

Duration: 10 Weeks (June 1st - August 7th)

Compensation: Paid/Hourly

Status: Full Time/Non-Exempt

Purpose

The purpose of KEMBA’s Internship Program is to provide students with a meaningful and enriching learning experience that helps them grow both personally and professionally. As an intern, you will gain hands-on experience, build real skills, and learn how a financial cooperative operates within the community.

This program is designed to introduce you to potential career paths in the credit union industry while offering support, mentorship, and opportunities to contribute to real projects. You will also learn more about financial literacy and the cooperative principles that guide our work, especially our commitment to education, training, and information.

Objective

The Consumer Lending Intern will support the Consumer Lending department by assisting with administrative tasks, learning core lending concepts, observing underwriting and processing workflows, and other duties. This role provides hands-on exposure to credit evaluation, lending processes, member needs, and product analysis while partnering with associates across the department.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Performs clerical tasks such as attaching documents, completing data entry, and mailing letters
  • Learns key lending concepts including:
    • Credit report components (utilization, payment history, tradeline mix)
    • Budget and repayment fundamentals (debt-to-income, payment-to-income, unsecured debt)
    • Collateral and loan-to-value concepts for auto and home equity loans
    • Basic loan performance indicators
  • Observes Underwriting and Processing teams to understand workflows, decisioning, and HELOC processes
  • Provides clerical support to Underwriters and Processors as assigned
  • Participates in credit, collateral, and product discussions to build foundational lending knowledge
  • Supports day-to-day lending operations during peak season
  • Prepares and delivers a final presentation to leadership summarizing project findings
  • Demonstrate professionalism and strong communication when interacting with associates and internal customers
  • Continues to develop skills and knowledge through assigned training and learning opportunities
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Capstone Project

  • Completes a capstone project that applies learned skills to real-world outcomes
  • Presents the completed project at the conclusion of the 10-week program

Required Qualifications

  • Actively pursuing a bachelor’s degree in finance, Business Management, or a related field
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Detail oriented with strong organizational skills
  • Professional written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Interest in consumer lending, banking, or financial services
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and follow established procedures
