Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company is seeking a Consultant, Software Engineering — Forward Deployed Engineering to design, develop, integrate and support AI-enabled solutions across enterprise platforms.

In this role you will mentor, drive secure software practices, and deliver cost-effective technology solutions with strong cross-team collaboration in a hybrid work environment with in-office presence twice weekly to support Columbus, OH area operations.

Qualifications

• Undergraduate studies in computer science, MIS, mathematics or related field preferred.
• Six+ years of programming, software engineering or systems analysis experience.
• Three years of project management experience preferred.

The Consultant, Software Engineering — Forward Deployed Engineering builds and continuously improves reusable enterprise capabilities that enable teams across the business to deliver and operate AI solutions more safely, quickly, consistently, responsibly, and economically. Working within cross-functional product and platform teams, this role designs, develops, integrates, deploys, and supports capabilities such as the AI Portal and Model Catalog, LLM-as-a-Service, model access, AgentCore, MCP services, HoneyHive, evaluation and observability tooling, guardrails, and developer enablement. The role consumes and extends shared capabilities provided by AI Platform Engineering, partners with that organization on reusable patterns and service interfaces and avoids duplicating platform capabilities in solution-specific implementations. The role extends shared AI Platform Engineering capabilities, and is accountable for the production readiness, reliability, security, privacy, observability, supportability, and cost effectiveness of the AI solutions and services it delivers. The ideal candidate brings strong AI, software, cloud, and platform engineering skills; experience with model integration, agent development, DevSecOps, security and privacy, governance, reliability, and cost management; and the ability to independently deliver outcomes, influence technical decisions, and improve reuse, developer experience, cost visibility, and enterprise adoption.

Work Arrangement:

This role follows a hybrid schedule and requires in-office presence in one of our office location two days per week. Candidates must be based within a commutable distance to Columbus, OH, Des Moines IA or Scottsdale AZ. Current internal associates working remotely may also be considered for this position.

Work Authorization:

This role does not qualify for employer-sponsored work authorization. Nationwide does not participate in the STEM OPT Extension program.

As a Software Engineer, you’ll focus on mentoring and guiding others to deliver high-quality, cost-effective technology solutions to business partners by crafting new software applications or modifying and/or supporting existing packaged or custom-built applications.

Job Description Key Responsibilities:

• Responsible for applying secure software and systems engineering practices throughout the delivery lifecycle to ensure our data and technology solutions are protected from threats and vulnerabilities.
• Mentor and train other team members on design techniques, tools, and coding standards.
• Provide strategic technical advice on using technology to achieve business and technology goals/strategy.
• Drive cross-collaboration and execution of projects across multiple teams.
• Analyze solutions, develop, test, debug, document, and deploy moderately complex software according to standards and best practices.
• Champion the adoption and effective use of DevSecOps practices, tooling, and techniques to improve software quality, security, automation, and delivery efficiency across teams.
• Manages multiple medium to large project priorities, deadlines, and deliverables proactively.
• May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships:

Reports to a Technology Manager/Director.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Undergraduate studies in computer science, management information systems, mathematics, or related field are strongly preferred. Experience: Six or more years of programming, software engineering or systems analysis experience. Three years of experience in project management is preferred. Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Hands-on technical leadership experience leading project teams and setting technical direction. Proficiency in one or more programming languages such as Java, C++, Python, and JavaScript. Knowledge of software development lifecycle. Proven ability to tackle sophisticated business and development problems. Ability to thrive in a team environment. Insurance/financial services industry knowledge a plus. Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence. Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager’s leader and Human Resources Business Partner.
