The K3-Innovations consultant will be responsible for:

- Conducting an operational efficiency assessment across preclinical R&D functions, including workflow mapping, resource utilization, and throughput analysis.

- Benchmarking internal performance (e.g., timelines, cost per study, FTE utilization) against industry peers using publicly available data and competitive intelligence sources.

- Developing models and dashboards to support capacity forecasting, resource planning, and scenario analysis.

- Evaluating current internal vs. outsourced work distribution and proposing improvements to vendor and CRO engagement strategy.

- Identifying process inefficiencies and making recommendations for improvement, including potential technology enablers or revised organizational structures.

- Delivering a final report with clear metrics, analysis, and strategic recommendations; presenting findings to executive leadership.

Requirements:

  • Conduct interviews and workshops with key stakeholders (e.g., R&D, Operations, Finance, Procurement). Align on objectives, current pain points, and success criteria.

Deliverable: Workshop summary with stakeholder priorities and initial observations.

  • Collect existing operational KPIs and performance data. Benchmark against industry standards or peer organizations. Deliverable: Metrics baseline report with comparative benchmarking analysis.
  • Map current staff, equipment, and functional allocation. Develop a simplified model showing utilization rates and bottlenecks. Deliverable: Resource utilization model and visual dashboard.
  • Review contracts, performance metrics, and cost data for current R&D suppliers. Evaluate strengths, risks, and alignment with goals. Deliverable: Supplier performance summary and recommendation matrix.
  • Identify operational, staffing, or process gaps contributing to inefficiency. Highlight bottlenecks across the research value chain. Deliverable: Comprehensive gap and bottleneck analysis report.
  • Develop prioritized recommendations for operational improvements, split into short-term and long-term initiatives. Deliverable: Final strategy report with implementation roadmap.
  • Prepare a concise summary presentation for senior leadership. Include key findings, risks, opportunities, and proposed actions. Deliverable: Executive deck and optional live presentation.

• Lead data collection, interviews, analysis, and reporting.

• Communicate regularly with a designated client point of contact.

• Deliver all work products in editable formats (PowerPoint, Excel, Word).

• Escalate any access, timing, or data quality issues early.

- Proven experience (10 years) in operational strategy, analytics, and R&D consulting within the biotech or pharmaceutical industry

- Direct familiarity with preclinical R&D environments, including in vivo/in vitro workflows, discovery, biology, pharmacology, and toxicology

- Demonstrated success in benchmarking, resource modeling, and cross-functional analytics

- Proficiency with tools including Excel, Power BI, Tableau, and resource/capacity planning platforms

- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills; ability to present complex data to executive audiences

- Preferred: prior engagements with mid-sized biotech companies and familiarity with CRO/vendor strategies
