Work Environment

This position can be based in any of our office locations or fully remote.

Job Responsibilities
  • Investigate and maintain specialty claims, primarily silica claims, with possible cases involving asbestos and other toxic torts.
  • Participate in claim reviews, roundtables, and meetings to discuss issues and trends in toxic tort litigation.
  • Review cases and contribute to case strategy, ensuring compliance with Nationwide guidelines.
  • Implement strategic litigation initiatives such as tolling agreements, resolution of lung cancer cases, and other methods of case resolution.
Ideal Candidate Qualifications
  • Environmental claims experience is highly preferred.
  • Knowledge of environmental dangers and legal cases related to environmental issues.
  • Experience with silica or asbestos claims is a plus.

Job Summary

We handle some of the most unique insurance claims at Nationwide. If you possess deep insurance industry knowledge, negotiation skills, and understanding of litigation, and enjoy variety and collaboration, we want to hear from you!

As a Claims Consultant, you'll handle complex specialty claims, investigating and managing asbestos, toxic tort, pollution, or sexual molestation cases.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review and analyze claims, investigate liability and damages.
  • Close files through dismissals or negotiations.
  • Determine settlement amounts or grounds for denial, assist with drafting settlement documents.
  • Provide reserve analysis for timely and accurate case reserves.
  • Negotiate cost-sharing agreements with other insurers and policyholders.
  • Stay updated on relevant laws, guidelines, and policies, attending seminars as needed.
  • Prepare reports and analyses for management and underwriting.
  • Manage litigation, select defense counsel, and monitor outside counsel work.
  • Serve as a company witness, attend mediations, and conduct legal audits.
  • Provide training and advice to claims staff and other departments.
  • Deliver excellent customer service to all stakeholders.
  • Lead specialty claims review and assist with staff training.
Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree preferred; post-graduate studies a plus.
  • State licensing where required; professional designations (e.g., CPCU, CLU) desirable.
  • Eight years of specialty claims experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of claims practices, insurance contracts, and legal issues.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to handle multiple priorities.
