Our Excess & Surplus/Specialty (E&S/S) lines allow us to provide insurance that other carriers may not offer. It’s a fast-paced environment in a collaborative, team-oriented culture, working in an always-changing, growing industry.

As an Underwriting Consultant in Brokerage Excess, you will underwrite individual risks for acceptability, pricing, coverage, terms, and conditions, by developing, analyzing, and evaluating information and exposures on risks of an increasing complex technical nature with a high level of authority for the Excess Casualty line of business. You will also be responsible for developing and maintaining strong relationships with brokers and program managers, reviewing claims and loss history, and achieving production and loss ratio goals.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Research and develop new classes of business, assess market viability, create forms & endorsements, and develop rates with actuarial support, collaborating with various departments on large, complex accounts.
  2. Review individual risks with assigned brokers, analyze exposures, develop premiums, determine endorsements, and place reinsurance when appropriate.
  3. Achieve team/individual production and loss ratio goals through sound broker management and marketing, addressing complex coverage issues and analyzing premium and loss results.
  4. Handle policy maintenance, endorse requests, review loss control reports, and ensure compliance with loss control recommendations.
  5. Build and maintain positive relationships with brokers, including travel for training or marketing visits, and contribute to marketing strategies.
  6. Understand and manage facultative reinsurance, maintaining good relationships with reinsurers.
  7. Resolve complex technical questions and develop technical and business knowledge continuously.
  8. Mentor and teach underwriting skills to colleagues and brokers.

Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed.

Skills and Experiences

Preferred education includes an undergraduate degree or equivalent experience. Completion of insurance courses such as CPCU, CIC, AU, ARM, CPIW, CWIS, or ASLI is preferred. Candidates should have at least eight years of CL underwriting experience, particularly with large or complex accounts and excess & surplus lines.

Necessary knowledge includes complex CL underwriting policies, insurance law, rating plans, reinsurance, and regulatory issues. Leadership skills and other competencies are also valued.
