Job summary

The City of Fort Lauderdale is seeking workers for skilled and semi-skilled trades in construction, renovation, and facility maintenance projects. This posting is open to internal and external applicants in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Qualifications

  • High School Degree or equivalency.
  • At least three (3) years of construction experience; college coursework may substitute for one year of experience.
  • Must possess or obtain a valid State of Florida Driver's License within 30 days of hire.
  • CDL - Class B with Air Brake may be required depending on department.
  • Veterans’ Preference requires DD214 and service-connected documentation as applicable.

Responsibilities

  • Estimates materials needed and workload for projects.
  • Performs maintenance on city buildings; painting and drywall replacement.
  • Performs roadway repairs and maintenance.
  • Repairs and restores existing plumbing systems.
  • Performs general carpentry and other construction type activities.
  • Installs doors, hardware, locks, etc.
  • Develops proposals for projects; creates cost estimates.
  • Completes minor renovation projects such as bathrooms with assistance.
  • Inspects and repairs playground equipment.
  • Performs general property maintenance.
  • Performs related work as required by lead worker or supervisor.

Job description

Performs skilled and semi-skilled trades work in the construction, renovation, rehabilitation, and restoration of properties and facility maintenance projects.

In accordance with Article 24 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of Fort Lauderdale and Teamsters Local Union 769, for posting purposes this open-competitive job posting shall be considered as a simultaneous internal and external posting (it is open to both internal City employees and external applicants)

Essential functions are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation. The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. The omission of a function does not preclude management from assigning essential duties not listed herein if such duties relate to the position.

  • Estimates materials needed and workload for projects

  • Performs related work as required or directed by lead worker or supervisor
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS
  1. High School Degree or equivalency
  2. Must possess at least three (3) years of construction experience. Additional completion of coursework at an accredited college or university in a job-related field, may substitute on a year-for-year basis for one year of the required experience.
  3. Possess or be able to obtain a valid State of Florida Driver's License within 30 days of hire.
  4. Depending on department, must possess a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) - Class B with Air Brake.
  5. PHYSICAL STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

The position involves heavy physical demands, such as exerting up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.
