Job summary

City of Rocky Mount is seeking a skilled Maintenance Worker to perform construction, repair, and maintenance of the water and sewer system.

You will assist in installation and repairs, operate tools, and support the crew supervisor; this role requires a high school diploma and valid driver's license with potential NC CDL Class B within six months. The work is outdoors with occasional on-call emergency rotations and safety emphasis.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Completion of an apprenticeship or internship, or 1–2 years relevant maintenance experience.
• Valid Driver's License with ability to obtain NC CDL Class B within 6 months.
• Previous experience in water and sewer maintenance preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist in installation, repairs and maintenance to City's Water and Sewer System.
• Assist in the Installation of, fire hydrants, water and sewer taps, meter boxes,etc.
• Assist in daily preparation and restoration of Construction sites.
• Repairs broken or damaged water or sewer mains.
• Assist Crew Supervisor in daily assignments.
• Operate various construction tools and equipment as needed. Installs barricades and other traffic control devices.
• Follows safety guidelines.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
• This position will require you to be on call for after hour emergencies for a 7-day 24 hour standby rotation every fourth week.

JOB SUMMARY

Education and Experience:

• Possession of high school diploma or equivalent.
• Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
• Possession of a current and valid driver's license with active and consecutive 3-year verifiable driving history. Driving history will be checked. (Must be able to be licensed in the State of North Carolina); with the ability to obtain a N.C. CDL Class B drivers license within (6) months of hire.
• Previous experience in Maintenance and Construction of Water and Sewer utilities.

• Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of assigned tools and equipment.
• Knowledge of City geography.
• Knowledge of safety standards.
• Skill in analyzing problems and identifying solutions.
• Skill in the repair and maintenance of hand and power tools.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• The work is light work which requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
