Job summary

City of Republic's Public Works Street Division seeks a general maintenance worker to perform manual tasks in construction, repair, maintenance, cleaning, and operation of the City's public works systems.

Under supervision, you will handle meters, hydrants, valves, and pipes, use hand and power tools, and maintain records. A Class B CDL with airbrakes and OSHA 10 are required during probation.

Qualifications

  • Minimum high school graduate or equivalent; 18 months of related maintenance experience.
  • Experience in construction and maintenance of utilities mains preferred.
  • Must be able to operate tractors, dump trucks or comparable excavation equipment.
  • Ability to read blueprints and maintain written and computerized reports.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in construction, repair, cleaning, chlorination, and maintenance of City utility mains.
  • Loads, unloads, and utilizes necessary equipment including hand and power tools such as shovels, picks, hammers, saws, jack hammers, etc.
  • Completes and maintains records, logs, daily work reports, and time reports as required.
  • Utilizes safety equipment and procedures reading instructions for product operation and safety.
  • Works with pipe, joining pipe and fittings, threading, laying, removing, or replacing pipe using piercing tools and small air machines.
  • Assembles meter setters and installs meter boxes and water meters for accessibility.
  • Cleans and rakes trench line; backfills dirt and spreads sand with hand tools.
  • Installs, repairs, and replaces fire hydrants, valves, meter pits, and covers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Deals effectively with fellow employees and the public.

Job description

*The entire range of pay for this position is posted. Typical starting pay will be at the beginning of the range, depending on qualifications.*

Primary Purpose

To performs a variety of manual tasks in the construction, repair, maintenance, cleaning, and operation of the City’s public works systems within the Street Division.

Supervision

Under the direct supervision of the assigned Project Supervisor, and general daily oversight of the assigned Crew Leader.

  1. Participates in the construction, repair, cleaning, chlorination, and maintenance of City utility mains as needed.
  2. Loads, unloads, and utilizes necessary equipment including hand and power tools such as shovels, picks, hammers, saws, jack hammers, etc.
  3. Completes and maintains records, logs, daily work reports, and time reports as required.
  4. Utilizes appropriate safety equipment and procedures through proper care and maintenance, reading and applying instructions for product operation, utilizing caution lights and barricades, and other safety related tasks.
  5. Works with pipe, including but not limited to joining pipe and fittings, threading pipe, assembling fittings, placing pipe in trenches. Laying, removing, or replacing pipe will require operating underground piercing tools, small air boring machines, paving breakers, air drills, tampers, and other related tools.
  6. Obtains required supplies from delivery truck and transports equipment to job site.
  7. Assembles meter setters and installs meter boxes and water meters, while ensuring accessibility for meter reading or servicing.
  8. Cleans and rakes trench line. Backfills dirt and spreads sand using hand tools.
  9. Installs, repairs, and replaces fire hydrants, valves, meter pits, manhole castings and covers.
  10. Services and makes minor repairs to assigned equipment.
  11. Deals effectively and courteously with fellow employees and the public.
  12. Performs other duties as assigned.
Important Duties
  1. Attends in-service training sessions or other training sessions deemed appropriate by supervisor or department head.
  2. Maintains a neat and orderly work area.
Education & Experience

Must be a High School graduate or equivalent. At least eighteen (18) months of experience in the related maintenance of which some experience must be in the construction and maintenance of utilities mains. Experience in the operation of tractors, dump trucks, or comparable excavation equipment preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Must be knowledgeable in the principles, procedures and equipment involved in the construction, maintenance, or repair of a variety of public utilities, roads, or other facilities. Must have the ability to read blueprints and be able to maintain manual and computerized records of replacement work and prepare report; Working knowledge of modern office procedures, ability to operate computers, and copiers; Answer phones as needed; Must be able to memorize and retain information; Must be able to effectively communicate through written and verbal skills; Must have good time management skills; Must have good cognitive and analytical skills; Must be able to handle stressful situations; Must have good time management skills; Must be able to quickly assess or judge situations and make decisions under pressure in areas of responsibility.

Special Requirements
  • Must possess a Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with airbrakes or obtain within a probationary employment period.
  • Must possess or receive an OSHA 10 Certification during probationary period.
Miscellaneous Requirements
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • May be required to work a variety of shifts including nights, weekends, or holidays.
  • Subject to emergency call-in.
  • Must be a dependable person due to the small size of the work force.
  • Will be subject to random substance abuse testing.
Physical Demands

Performs bending, squatting, crawling, twisting, kneeling, and reaching to ground level and overhead; Must be able to reach, grip and hold; Must be able to walk and stand for prolonged periods of time; Must be able to lift 50 pounds above their head; Must be able to push, pull and carry 80 pounds.

Work Environment

Both indoor and outdoor working environments with exposure to dust and pollen, toxic fumes, chemicals or smoke, contagious diseases, electrical and mechanical hazards associated with equipment, extreme noise; Subject to variety of extreme weather condition; Susceptible to safety hazards associated with working in and around high traffic volume; Works in confined places and awkward positions.
