This role combines:

  • Hands-on survey/GPS, machine control, and drone mapping on key projects, and
  • Responsibility for standards, controls, data integrity, and technology adoption (Trimble, Propeller, base stations, and GPS-controlled fleet). You will work closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, Estimators, and the Equipment team to ensure our models, machines, and data are accurate, consistent, and truly useful in the field and the office.
Key Responsibilities
  1. Construction Technology Ownership - Serve as the primary owner of Wagner’s construction technology stack including:
  • Trimble Business Center
  • GPS machine control and rovers
  • Base stations
  • Develop and maintain company-wide standards for:
  • Site control, localizations, and calibrations
  • Model-building workflows and file structures
  • Drone mapping procedures and deliverables
  • Naming conventions and version control for all project models and data.
  • Coordinate with leadership on technology planning and budgeting, including hardware, software, licensing, and upgrades.
  1. GPS, Machine Control & Base Station Management
  • Work with equipment and site managers to manage GPS infrastructure for approximately 40–50 pieces of GPS-controlled equipment and 10–15 base stations
  • Set up and maintain base stations, site calibrations, and control networks to ensure consistent, accurate positioning across projects
  • Build, manage, and update Trimble Business Center models for use in rovers and machine control
  • Oversee distribution, versioning, and documentation of all control files and models used by field crews and equipment
  • Assist the Equipment team with hardware configurations, updates, and troubleshooting for GPS/machine control systems.
  1. Drone Mapping & Quantity Verification (Propeller)
  • Plan and coordinate Propeller drone mapping operations for active projects
  • Process flight data and generate accurate surfaces, contours, and 3D model
  • Use Propeller outputs to:
  • Verify earthwork and trench quantities
  • Support as-built documentation and closeout.
  • Align drone data with Trimble models, survey control, and CAD design files to maintain consistency across platforms.
  • Establish and manage data controls so field data and models feed cleanly into estimating, project budgets and cost codes, schedules, and production tracking.
  • Perform 2D and 3D takeoffs using Trimble and AutoCAD 3D/Civil 3D to support estimating and preconstruction.
  • Assist Estimators by validating quantities and constructability, and preparing models that can transition directly to field use.
  • Provide Project Managers with quantity verification and production reports using drone data, survey/GPS, and model comparisons.
  • Support owner and subcontractor billings with accurate survey- and drone-based quantity data.
  1. Documentation, Standards & Training
  • Maintain document control and equipment files for all GPS, base station, and machine control configurations.
  • Create and maintain SOPs, checklists, templates, and quick-reference guides for survey and layout, GPS/machine control processes, and drone mapping and data delivery.
  • Train and mentor foremen, superintendents, operators, and junior GPS/survey staff on use of Trimble, Propeller, and related tools.
  • Support pre-construction and construction meetings where models, layout, quantities, or data workflows are discussed.
  1. Field Support & Safety
  • Provide field support for layout, checks, and verification on complex underground utilities, site, and heavy civil projects.
  • Prepare and keep current as-built drawings and digital records that reflect actual field conditions.
  • Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders that reflect Wagner’s core values.
  • Understand and support all jobsite safety requirements and participate in Wagner’s safety program.
Qualifications
  • B.S. in Construction Management, Engineering, Surveying, Geomatics, or related field, OR a strong equivalent combination of field experience (typically 3–7+ years in heavy civil/site/underground with GPS, survey, and construction technology responsibilities).
  • Demonstrated experience with:
  • GPS machine control and rover workflows
  • Base station setup, site calibrations, and control networks
  • Propeller or similar drone mapping platforms
  • AutoCAD 3D/Civil 3D for surfaces and model refinement.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, profiles, and construction documents.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and projects.
  • Solid decision-making ability under tight deadlines, sometimes with incomplete information.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), Bluebeam, and general PC and cloud-based file management.
