Job summary

RANGE is seeking a Construction Technician-I in Ashland, MT to support field crews on fiber, copper, and aerial cabling projects. You will perform entry‑level labor, operate common construction equipment, and help with splicing and repairs under supervision. Frequent travel is required to support multiple sites.

You will maintain cables, document work using Excel and time entry systems, and ensure safety with PPE. Prior construction exposure and a valid driver's license are preferred.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
• 1+ year construction experience with equipment preferred.
• Valid state driver’s license required.
• Technical schooling or associate degree preferred in electronics/telecommunications/construction.
• CDL and certifications (Tower/Pole) are a plus.

Responsibilities

• Place direct buried cabling (fiber/copper) into ground.
• Operate earthwork equipment (plows, trencher, digging tools) and perform splices.
• Maintain and repair buried cables per plans and work orders.
• Install and remove aerial cabling and poles; inspect and replace as needed.
• Perform cable tests, troubleshoot issues, and document results.
• Maintain data, time entries, and materials in Excel; schedule meetings with stakeholders.

Job Summary

Under the oversight of the Construction Supervisor, the Construction Technician-I performs entry‑level labor and project work. The role requires basic knowledge of fiber optic, copper, and ariel cabling, and operations of industrial equipment (vibratory plow, trencher, digging equipment and industrial pneumatic bore). Work tasks are laborious and require the use of hand tools (shovels, drills, hammers, etc.). In support of the Technician-II and Leads, this role assists with placement and removal of cable, performs splices, and maintains or repairs cables in accordance with construction plans and work orders. Requires use and wear of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). Frequent travel for construction projects is a requirement for success in this position.

Essential Duties, Responsibilities And Expectations

Perform in a support role and place direct buried cabling (fiber, copper) into the ground/earth.

• Perform earthwork labor with various hand tools and industry related equipment (vibratory plow, trencher, digging equipment, industrial pneumatic bore).
• Perform maintenance of buried cable, performing tests and repairs (removals, replacement, and splicing).
• Restore all disturbed surfaces including concrete and pavement surfaces to acceptable conditions.
• As assigned, operates (when supervised) various heavy equipment, as needed (plows, backhoes, trailer, etc.).
• Mounts demarcation devices and protectors at customer premises.
• Assists with the maintenance of construction equipment, trailers, and vehicles.

Performs related construction tasks as required.

Aerial Cabling

• Assists with installation and removal of aerial cable and pole lines.
• Assists with inspection, replacement, or repair of aerial cable and poles.
• elect and attach appropriate hardware, install, or reinstall in accordance with project work order.

Cable Splicing

• Work with copper and fiber optic cables in accordance with construction plans and drawings (new construction).

Maintenance And Repairs With Copper And Fiber Optic Cabling

• Assist with preventative maintenance on project worksite(s) cables.
• Perform cable tests to troubleshoot issues and identify defective components or sections.
• Repair or remove and replace defective cable section or related component(s).
• Remove obsolete cable as appropriate.

Mount demarcation devices and system protectors at assigned project work locations (customer’s property, field work site, company’s facility).

Assist with Data Center frames, tip cables and fiber distribution frames and cables, as necessary.

Operate daily, a computer system and software programs which include, but are not limited to performing documentation of time entries, expense reports, material usage documentation, review credit card statements, and process fiber testing reports (from test meters).

• Other computer programs operated daily, including mapping software, MS Teams, and Virtual training (webinars, videos).

Maintain and organize department files related to current / completed jobs, and receipts.

Perform data entry into Excel, denoting cable footages, reel numbers, and other materials used.

Schedule meetings with customers, contractors, and other utilities to go over plans for jobs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION):

• Successful completion of a grade-12 high school diploma program, equivalent GED type of secondary education certificate / diploma.
• A minimum of one (1) year of successful work experience performing construction work, and operating mechanical/pneumatic equipment.
• A valid, state-issued, and insurable drivers’ license.

Preferred:

• Successful completion of Technical School, a 2-year / associate degree (in Electronics, Telecommunications, and/or Construction)
• Class A CDL
• Tower Certification
• Pole Certification

Physical Demands And Working Conditions

• Stands and walks while performing assigned work on project work sites, often in outdoor environments for up to 9 hours / day or longer depending on the demands of the job.
• Frequently works in outdoor settings and is not necessarily protected from weather conditions.
• Frequent use of technology, computers, devices, hand tools, power tools and industrial equipment (Repetitive hand motion and physical exertion is required).
• This role may be assigned to work requiring travel, which can reach up to 75% of the role schedule.
• Performs functions that present physical hazards, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, intense vibrations, high pitched noise exposures, working on scaffolding / ladders and high places, working in small areas (crawl spaces, trenches, etc.), and/or exposure to chemicals in work setting.
• Hearing, listening, talking, standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, kneeling, squatting, balancing, pushing/pulling, and climbing stairs are all expectations of this role, although some of these functions may be more seldom performed than others.
• Must be able to lift a minimum of 100 pounds at times.
