Job description

Carolina Excavation & Grading is seeking an experienced Survey Layout Technician to join our team. We specialize in complete site development for residential communities, including mass grading, storm drainage, sanitary sewer, water distribution, erosion control, roadway construction, curb, and related site infrastructure.

This position will primarily be responsible for field staking and construction layout to support our grading and utility crews. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working independently in the field, reading civil construction plans, establishing accurate layout, and coordinating directly with project managers, superintendents, and field crews.

Primary Responsibilities

• Perform construction staking and layout for active residential development projects
• Lay out sanitary sewer mains, manholes, and laterals
• Lay out water mains, services, valves, hydrants, and related infrastructure
• Lay out storm drainage pipe, catch basins, junction boxes, headwalls, and other structures
• Stake curb and gutter, roadway alignments, sidewalks, building pads, and other site improvements
• Establish offsets, grades, elevations, benchmarks, and construction control
• Provide accurate cut/fill and elevation information to field crews
• Re-establish stakes or layout that has been disturbed during construction
• Read and interpret civil construction plans, profiles, details, and specifications
• Verify field conditions against construction plans and communicate discrepancies to project management
• Coordinate daily staking needs with project/survey manager(s), superintendents, foremen, and utility crews
• Maintain organized survey/layout files and field data
• Download, upload, and manage survey points and construction layout data
• Assist with quantity verification and as-built information when necessary
• Maintain and care for company survey/GPS equipment

Qualifications

• Previous experience with construction staking, site layout, or civil surveying
• Experience working on grading, utility, roadway, or site development projects preferred
• Strong understanding of civil construction plans
• Ability to understand elevations, grades, slopes, offsets, stationing, and utility profiles
• Experience laying out underground utilities is strongly preferred
• Experience with GPS, robotic total stations, data collectors, and/or similar survey equipment
• AutoCAD and/or Civil 3D experience strongly preferred
• Ability to work independently and manage staking priorities across multiple crews or projects
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
• Good communication skills and ability to work directly with field personnel
• Valid driver's license
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and jobsite conditions
