Job summary

IREN is seeking a Construction Superintendent - Controls/Automation to lead the installation, integration and commissioning of BMS, PLCs, DDC and related interfaces in data center environments in Childress, TX. This hands-on role requires strong on-site supervision, cross-trade coordination and a relentless focus on safety, quality and schedule.

• Experience supervising controls deployment on data centers and complex HVAC systems.
• Strong knowledge of industrial controls and protocols (BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks, Profibus, Ethernet/IP).
• Ability to read electrical schematics, P&IDs and control drawings.
• OSHA 30 certification required; NFPA70E is a plus.
• Leadership, communication, and ability to manage multiple contractors in a fast-paced environment.

We are seeking aConstruction Superintendent - Controls/Automation to lead the installation, integration, and commissioning of advanced building management systems (BMS), programmable logic controllers (PLCs), direct digital controls (DDC), and automated mechanical/electrical interfaces in high-performance data center environments. Job Requirements

• Journeyman Electrician License.
• High school diploma or equivalent; Associate or Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automation, Construction Management, or related field preferred.
• Minimum of 7 years of experience in commercial or industrial building automation and controls, including at least 3 years in a foreman, lead, or supervisory role.
• Demonstrated experience supervising controls and automation deployment on mission-critical facilities, data centers, complex HVAC systems, liquid cooling loops, power distribution units, and central utility plants.
• Strong knowledge of industrial control systems, communication protocols (e.g., BACnet, Modbus, Lon Works, Profibus, Ethernet/IP), network architecture, and field instrumentation (sensors, transmitters, actuators, VFDs).
• Proficiency in reading and interpreting electrical schematics, P&IDs, control drawings, sequence of operations (SOO), input/output (I/O) point lists, and manufacturer specifications.
• Working knowledge of applicable industry codes and standards, including NEC, UL, ASHRAE, ISA, and NFPA.
• Strong understanding of loop tuning, signal calibration, point-to-point verification, network troubleshooting, and automated system integration.
• Ability to plan manpower, coordinate access and sequencing with mechanical and electrical trades, and manage daily and weekly production targets.
• OSHA 30 certification required; First Aid/CPR, competent-person, fall-protection, or electrical safety (NFPA 70E) certifications are a plus.
• Relevant controls certifications (e.g., Niagara AX/4 Certified, PLC programming certificates, or equivalent trade qualifications) preferred.
• Strong leadership, communication, documentation, and conflict-resolution skills, with the ability to manage multiple specialty contractors and priorities in a fast-paced construction environment.
• High attention to detail with a practical, solutions-oriented approach to field quality, software/hardware integration, and constructability issues.

Other Important Requirements

• Pre-employment screening, including background check and substance testing may be required according to company policies.
• Must provide own steel-toed work boots; other PPE will be supplied.
• Must be able to reliably commute to the work site daily or have plans to relocate before starting work.
• Must be comfortable working a rotational schedule, which includes day and night shifts as well as weekend work, based on project needs.
• Employees working night shifts will receive a 15% premium added to their hourly rate only for hours worked during night shifts.

Job Responsibilities

• Lead, mentor, and supervise controls technicians, integration specialists, subcontractors, and vendor engineers performing automation work across the project.
• Plan daily activities, assign crews, coordinate access with other trades, and monitor productivity to achieve project milestones safely and on schedule.
• Oversee the installation, wiring, termination, and mounting of control panels, PLCs, DDC controllers, sensors, meters, valves, actuators, and network hardware.
• Review control schematics, network architectures, point lists, sequences of operations, and submittals before field work begins.
• Verify that mechanical and electrical systems have passed required preliminary tests, flushing, and inspections before initiating point-to-point checkout.
• Oversee comprehensive point-to-point checks, calibration, loop tuning, and functional testing of all hardware and software control loops.
• Ensure neat and organized cable routing, proper wire labeling, shielding continuity, grounding standards, and panel tidiness.
• Coordinate automation sequencing and physical interfaces with mechanical, piping, HVAC, liquid-cooling, electrical, fire-protection, and structural teams.
• Collaborate with controls engineers, software vendors, and commissioning authorities to resolve integration bottlenecks, network conflicts, and logic anomalies.
• Support first-work inspections, mockups, Inspection and Test Plans, quality hold points, and routine field inspections to confirm compliance with sequence of operations.
• Identify, document, and correct wiring errors, faulty hardware, communication drops, or non-conforming installation practices; manage punch-list items and verify closure before turnover.
• Support final commissioning, integrated systems testing (IST), and data center black-site testing by troubleshooting active loops and monitoring real-time data trends.
• Manage controls material and hardware deliveries, secure storage, handling, and inventory to prevent damage, theft, or moisture exposure.
• Track installed quantities, manpower, productivity, network completion status, and forecasted milestones; provide accurate daily and weekly updates to construction management.
• Enforce OSHA regulations, NFPA 70E safety requirements, and safe practices for working around live electrical panels, control loops, scaffolds, ladders, and aerial lifts.
• Lead pre-task planning, Job Hazard Analyses, toolbox talks, and field safety observations; investigate incidents or near misses and implement corrective actions.
• Maintain daily reports, calibration logs, network as-builts, redlines, and software backup documentation required for system turnover and facility handover.
• Train site personnel and operations teams on basic panel troubleshooting, hardware layout, and immediate override procedures.
• Promote energy-efficient automation strategies that optimize system performance, minimize power usage effectiveness (PUE), and support the reliable operation of high-density data center cooling infrastructure.

Compensation

• The expected hourly rate for this role starts at $73.00 U SD.
  • Actual compensation will be determined based on factors such as experience, qualifications.
• Per Diem amount of $180.00 and project allowance, when applicable
• 15% night-shift premium for eligible roles, when applicable
• Overtime compensation for non-exempt workers for hours worked over 40 per week
