Job description

Under the direction of the medical center's Engineering Supervisor of Construction, the Construction Mechanic I is responsible for implementing the medical center's in-house construction projects. With expertise in three major construction trades and familiarity with all phases of construction, the role involves involvement from demolition to the installation of finishes.

Core Competencies
  1. Works with the Construction Supervisor on new construction projects to ensure that proposed additions or changes meet medical center standards.
  2. Ensures all new equipment purchases fit into the medical center system or are modified to do so, participating in the capital purchase process.
  3. Demonstrates familiarity with plumbing, electrical, and air conditioning trades to ensure proper installation following guidelines set by the Construction Supervisor and Director of Engineering.
  4. Familiar with tools, materials, codes, industry practices, safety procedures, and installation methods for installing wall and ceiling framing, drywall, mechanical supports, and door frames to standards accepted by the Medical Center and inspection bodies.
  5. Produces and finishes concrete, including formwork, grading, pouring, and finishing slabs, walkways, and other structures, adhering to safety and industry standards.
  6. Installs T-bar ceiling framing, tiles, and access panels, with proficiency in glue-on tile installation.
  7. Ensures quality in finished products, including taping, plastering, and patching walls to match existing textures.
  8. Prepares floors for finishing materials and oversees installation processes.
  9. Produces finished ceramic wall and floor tiles.
  10. Maintains accurate records of materials, tools, and work conditions to ensure inventory levels meet project needs.
  11. Properly disassembles and removes areas designated for demolition according to plans.
  12. Coordinates with the medical center for utility shutdowns during construction activities.
  13. Stores reusable items to prevent damage and facilitate future use.
  14. Reads plans and specifications to lay out work, locate, and mark structures or fixtures for removal or installation.
  15. Immediately reports deviations from standard procedures to the Construction Supervisor.
  16. Attends required meetings and participates in emergency response as needed.
  17. Fills in as a Maintenance Mechanic I, performing all necessary skills and duties.
  18. Available for emergency calls 24/7.
  19. Engages in ongoing professional development to stay current in the field.
  20. Participates in medical center committees and represents the department as directed.
  21. Works during emergency situations across the Medical Center as directed.
Experience & Additional Information

Knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and Local building and safety codes. At least two years of experience in construction and hospital environments. Proficiency in three major trades, with experience in others. Ability to read blueprints, technical drawings, and equipment manuals. Capable of inspecting, testing, repairing, and replacing electrical circuits and appliances. Knowledge of management principles and some experience with IT and telephone systems.

Compensation Range: $24.76 - $37.40 / Hour
