Job description

Job Title: Construction Materials Testing Technician Job Description
The Construction Materials Testing Technician performs field and laboratory testing of construction materials in accordance with industry standards and protocols. This role supports a variety of construction projects by conducting inspections, interpreting construction plans and blueprints, and accurately documenting findings through daily field reports. The technician uses specialized testing equipment while working in physically demanding field conditions to help ensure the quality, safety, and compliance of construction work.

Responsibilities
  • Perform construction materials testing in accordance with applicable industry standards, procedures, and protocols.
  • Conduct field inspections of construction materials such as concrete, soils, asphalt, and masonry to verify compliance with project specifications.
  • Utilize testing equipment and tools safely and correctly while performing field and laboratory tests.
  • Complete detailed daily field reports that document test results, site conditions, observations, and any nonconforming work.
  • Read and interpret construction plans and blueprints to determine testing locations, procedures, and acceptance criteria.
  • Communicate effectively with project personnel, contractors, and supervisors regarding test results, site issues, and required corrective actions.
  • Perform physical activities required for testing, including squatting, bending, lifting, climbing, and traversing difficult terrain.
  • Lift and carry testing equipment and materials weighing up to 80 pounds as needed for field assignments.
  • Travel to various project sites in the region using a company vehicle as assigned.
  • Work after regular business hours, on weekends, and occasionally on holidays when project schedules require it.
  • Maintain testing equipment in good working condition and report any issues or calibration needs promptly.
  • Follow all safety policies and procedures while working in the field and in the laboratory.
Essential Skills
  • Ability to perform physical activities required for construction materials testing, including squatting, bending, lifting, climbing, and traversing difficult terrain.
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 80 pounds.
  • Basic understanding of construction plans and blueprints to support testing and inspection activities.
  • Valid driver's license with the ability and willingness to travel to various project sites.
  • Willingness to work after regular business hours, on weekends, and sometimes on holidays when necessary.
  • Experience in the construction industry.
  • Familiarity with construction materials testing practices and procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy when recording test results and observations.
  • Ability to follow established testing protocols and safety procedures.
  • Effective communication skills to interact with project teams and document findings clearly.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • NCDOT certification preferred.
  • American Concrete Institute (ACI) Field Technician Level I certification preferred.
  • Nuclear Gauge User Certification preferred.
  • NICET Level I Soils certification preferred.
  • NICET Level I Concrete certification preferred.
  • NICET Level I Asphalt certification preferred.
  • ICC Reinforced Concrete and Structural Masonry certifications are beneficial; training is available if not already held.
  • Background or familiarity with healthcare and higher education construction projects is a plus.
  • Willingness to pursue additional professional certifications and training supported by the company.
  • Interest in professional development and long-term growth in construction materials testing.
Work Environment

This role is based in and around Cary, NC and primarily involves working in a field environment on active construction sites. The position requires frequent travel to different project locations, often over uneven or difficult terrain, and regular performance of physically demanding tasks such as squatting, bending, lifting, and climbing. Work may be required outside of regular business hours, including evenings, weekends, and occasionally holidays, depending on project needs. The technician uses specialized testing equipment and may receive a company vehicle and cell phone allowance to support field activities. Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $53000.00 - $75000.00/yr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
