Job summary

Facade Today is seeking a full-time field technician to observe contractors and perform tests on soil, concrete, and asphalt. The position involves communication with clients and requires a high school diploma along with strong organizational skills.

The ideal candidate should have at least 1 to 2 years of testing experience and be competent in using MS Word, Excel, and Outlook. The role includes travel within the Southeast Michigan area and may require overtime.

Job description

Overview

Observes contractors on construction sites and performs basic field soil and concrete tests under the direction of other PEA Group technicians or engineering professionals to ensure that testing, sampling, or inspection is performed consistent with project specifications.

Responsibilities
  • Observes, measures, and performs testing on soils, concrete, asphalt, and other construction materials on construction related project.
  • Prepares detailed and complete daily field reports with all relevant test results, measurements and observations provided.
  • Performs basic laboratory tests on soil and concrete and prepares reports of results.
  • Evaluates site soil conditions on construction projects and provides recommendations.
  • Communicates with clients, contractors, and engineering and technician staff regarding construction issues.
  • Verifies conformance of projects with approved construction documents.
  • Communicates in an effective and professional manner with project managers, contractors, and owner/owner’s representatives throughout project.
  • Performs maintenance and calibrates /verifies status of laboratory testing equipment.
  • Compiles, analyzes, computes, edits and processes lab data and accurately perform various tests in accordance with applicable standards.
  • Adheres to safety protocols and procedures outlined by PEA Group.
Qualifications

Formal Education, Licenses and Certifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent highly preferred.
  • Technician Certifications such as American Concrete Institute (ACI) Certification, ICC or MCA are preferred but not mandatory.
  • Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
  • Ability to work with computers and mobile technologies to create and submit reports.

Knowledge and Experience

  • 1 to 2 years of experience performing field or laboratory testing.
  • General knowledge of math and science.
  • Thorough knowledge of MS Word, Outlook and Excel.

Competencies and Personal Attributes

  • Highly organized and able to multi-task and work effectively with limited supervision.
  • Able to read construction specifications and drawings and maps, or able to learn.
  • Able to use and read measurement tools and perform basic calculations.
  • Able to perform manual labor associated with the equipment used for testing.
  • Able to work with computers and mobile technologies to create and submit reports daily.
  • Highly professional demeanor.
  • Reliability – must be able to arrive at designated project sites prior to scheduled times.
  • Strong math skills and interest in mathematics.
  • Willingness to work in an outdoors environment in all weather conditions.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screen, background check and must have a satisfactory driving record.
  • Strong work ethic and ability to work well on a team.
  • Positive attitude and desire to learn.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Fieldwork involves working outdoors in all types of weather, walking long distances, and standing for extended periods while measurements are taken. Some assignments may require working in confined spaces or climbing and working at above average heights. While performing these duties, an employee is frequently required to stoop; kneel; sit; talk; hear; stand; walk; use hands and fingers to feel, handle, or operate objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The position lifts heavy objects; the employee must frequently lift and/or move items over 50 pounds.

The employee lifts, pushes, pulls or carries objects; uses abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue.

Availability

This is a full-time position. Days of work are Monday through Friday and shifts are 8 or 10 hours with the start time varying from 7 a.m. or 8 a.m., overtime and weekends as required.

Travel

As a part of performing this position’s duties, travel will be required to respective job sites in the Southeast Michigan area and potential for select projects throughout the United States.
