Job summary

ICON is seeking a Construction Materials Technician to join our Materials Science team in Austin, TX. You’ll contribute to the development and testing of cement-based materials powering our advanced 3D printing technology, supporting both laboratory and field testing to ensure quality, performance, and reliability.

Based in ICON’s lab, you will perform standardized tests, assist with procedures, transport and document samples, and help maintain testing records.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in concrete, cement, or construction materials testing.
  • Ability to obtain ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I certification within 3 months of hire.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Willingness to work collaboratively in a dynamic environment.
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds and work outdoors/in construction settings.
  • Proficient in English.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and clean laboratory tools and testing equipment; assist with calibrations and basic troubleshooting.
  • Monitor laboratory supplies and help track inventory.
  • Participate in safety procedures and protocols for laboratory and field environments.
  • Assist with waste management practices at job and test sites.
  • Support other departments with materials testing needs when required.
  • Perform physical tasks, including lifting materials up to 50 lbs and working outdoors in varying conditions.

Job description

ICON is seeking a Construction Materials Technician to join our innovative Materials Science team. In this role, you’ll play a key part in the development and testing of the cement‑based materials that power ICON’s advanced 3D printing technology. You’ll support both laboratory and field testing efforts to ensure the quality, performance, and reliability of our construction materials. This position is based at ICON’s lab in Austin, TX, and reports directly to the Senior Materials Engineering Manager.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform standardized laboratory tests on aggregates, cement, concrete, and related materials under guidance from senior staff.
  • Assist with the development and execution of testing procedures for 3D printed cement‑based materials.
  • Support internal quality control activities by fabricating and transporting test samples, recording test data, and helping maintain test documentation.
  • Prepare materials and equipment for experiments and help carry out testing plans developed by engineers and scientists.
  • Maintain and clean laboratory tools and testing equipment; assist with calibrations and basic troubleshooting.
  • Monitor laboratory supplies and help track inventory.
  • Participate in safety procedures and protocols for both laboratory and field environments.
  • Assist with waste management practices at job and test sites.
  • Support other departments with materials testing needs when required.
  • Perform physical tasks, including lifting materials up to 50 lbs and working outdoors in varying conditions.
  • Must be willing to perform a wide range of tasks daily (e.g. transition from lab to field work at a moment’s notice, conduct tests individually, fill up bench sheets, work with machinery commonly found in concrete labs like end grinders, saws, hydraulic press, etc.).
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • 3+ years of experience in concrete, cement, or construction materials testing.
  • Basic understanding of lab procedures and materials handling.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Willingness to work collaboratively on a team and take initiative in a dynamic environment.
  • Comfortable lifting up to 50 pounds and working in outdoor or construction settings.
  • Proficient or fluent in English.
  • Ability to obtain ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I certification within 3 months of hire.
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
  • ACI Concrete Laboratory Testing Technician certification.
  • Familiarity with ASTM test methods for concrete and mortar.
  • Experience working in a laboratory or on active construction sites.
  • Basic computer skills (Google Workspace or MS Office).
  • Strong attention to detail and curiosity to learn new processes.
  • Experience or interest in working at a startup or with emerging construction technologies.
  • Flexibility to work occasional extended hours or weekends as needed.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds safely and regularly.
  • Comfortable working in various outdoor environments, including extreme temperatures (above 100°F or below freezing), sun, rain, mud, and areas with limited infrastructure (e.g., lack of electricity).
  • Comfortable standing and moving on your feet for the majority of the workday.
  • Flexible availability to work nights and weekends as needed.
