Job summary

S&ME in Asheville, North Carolina, is seeking a Construction Materials Engineering Technician with 5+ years of experience to perform field testing and material inspections across diverse project sites. The role includes opportunities to earn additional certifications and to mentor junior technicians.

The successful candidate will work with a team that values technical excellence and client service, and will travel as project needs require, with a company vehicle provided for project work.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED required.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in construction testing/inspecting soil, concrete, masonry, and/or asphalt materials.
• Active industry certifications (ACI Field Testing Grade I; Strength Testing Technician; Laboratory Technician; ICC Special Inspector) are required.
• Effective communication skills in English (spoken and written).
• Good math skills with understanding of weight, volume, pressure, and units of measure.
• Able to accommodate frequent travel and a fluctuating schedule, including early mornings and overtime.

Responsibilities

• Project and Document Review: capture observations and test results for soils, concrete, asphalt and related materials.
• Metafield? Utilization: manage field and laboratory data using information systems.
• Equipment Maintenance: ensure field and lab tools meet industry standards.

About The Role:

As a seasoned Construction Materials Engineering Technician, you'll be equipped with a company vehicle to conduct field testing and observations of construction materials at various project sites. At S&ME, we are committed to ensuring everything is \"built right,\" and we take that responsibility very seriously. You'll also have the chance to earn additional certifications, which will help you advance in your career, take on more complex testing tasks, assume greater responsibilities, and mentor junior technicians.

• Project and Document Review: Understand project requirements before fieldwork; accurately record observations and test results related to construction materials such as soil, concrete, asphalt, and other pertinent materials.


• Metafield® Utilization: Efficiently manage data using field and laboratory information systems.


• Equipment Maintenance: Ensure field and lab tools are accurate and meet industry standards.


• Inspection Monitoring: Follow International Building Code (IBC) standards for testing and inspecting construction materials.


• Stakeholder Communication: Interact with management, contractors, and clients to report project progress and resolve any issues.

Experience shifting work hours based on project needs and weather conditions, including early mornings, some Saturdays, and overtime (paid at time and a half).

About You:

• You have a High School diploma/GED


• You have a minimum of 5 years of experience in construction testing/inspecting soil, concrete, masonry, and/or asphalt materials

• You understand a fluctuating schedule and have an interest in frequent travel

You Are Willing and Able to:

Perform the physical demands of the position with the use of company-provided Personal Protective Equipment such as:

• Working the majority of the time outdoors in varying weather conditions


• Walking over rough, uneven terrain and standing for potentially up to 12 hours a day


• Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs (field/laboratory samples and equipment)


• Maneuvering field equipment safely, such as a loaded wheelbarrow, on uneven ground around active construction sites
