Job description

Under moderate supervision, build, repair, and maintain HFC (hybrid fiber coax) plant and FTTH (Fiber to the Home) plant. Work on a crew to construct outside plant Aerial/UG network infrastructure.

Actively and consistently support all efforts to simplify and enhance the customer experience.

Perform complex installations of cable in underground and/or overhead environments following the latest company specifications and industry standards.

Prepare underground system plant for repairs, including trenching, potholing, backfill, and repair or replacement of conduits, poles, risers, or pedestals.

Investigate and repair cut fiber optic cables or impairments.

Dig trenches, fill ditches, bury cables, and install cables in trenches and conduits.

Install equipment for HFC & FTTH, ground plant, or place rods or wires for grounding future installations.

Collaborate with other Construction Technicians, in-house Technicians, and third-party contractors.

Perform traffic control and flagging as needed.

Load and unload cable equipment and tools.

Read system prints and install cables accordingly.

Calculate signal losses using signal level meters.

Follow all relevant industry-specific local, state, and federal regulations.

Adhere to company policies.

Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English.
  • Proficiency with hand tools such as drills, hammers, wrenches, screwdrivers.
  • Ability to walk over various terrains in all weather conditions while carrying tools and equipment.
  • Safe use of weight-bearing equipment like gaffs, safety harnesses, and ladders within weight limits.
  • Proficiency with personal computers and software applications.
  • Accurate measurement skills with tapes or other devices.
  • Ability to carry, climb, and operate extension ladders (~32 ft, 90 lbs).
  • Ability to climb poles using gaffs, hooks, and belts.
  • Ability to differentiate wire sizes, types, and colors.
  • Skill in making cable connections in tight spaces.
  • Operate test equipment such as signal level meters and ohm meters.
  • Work from high places like poles and roofs.
  • Stand for 50-70% of work time.
  • Work with small components and wires.
  • Use handheld communication devices.
  • Follow safety and company policies.
  • Ability to dig in various soils.
  • Drive company vehicles responsibly.
  • Operate underground and overhead cable installation machinery.
  • Prioritize and organize tasks effectively.
  • Read and interpret system blueprints.
  • Work independently and as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of fiber architectures and plant maintenance.
  • Experience with fusion splicers and related equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of mathematics and electronics.
  • Understanding of company products and services.
  • Knowledge of NEC, NESC, OSHA standards.
Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
  • Commercial Driver License - Class A.
  • Industry and vendor certifications (NCTI, SCTE, BCT/E) preferred.
  • At least 2 years of construction experience preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Utility/Electrical/Telecom experience.
  • OSHA 10, electrical training, NESC Communications 1910.268 certifications.
  • Over 1 year of relevant utility or telecom experience.
Working Conditions
  • Indoor confined spaces, poorly ventilated areas.
  • Exposure to dust, noise, insects, rodents, pets, cleaning solutions.
  • Outdoor work in all weather conditions and times of day/night.
  • Work near power lines and at heights on poles.
  • Travel and work in inclement weather as required.
