Job description

Under moderate supervision, build, repair, and maintain HFC (hybrid fiber coax) plant and FTTH (Fiber to the Home) plant. Work on a crew to construct outside plant Aerial/UG network infrastructure.

Actively and consistently support all efforts to simplify and enhance the customer experience.

Perform complex installations of cable in underground and/or overhead environments following the latest company specifications and industry standards.

Prepare underground system plant for repairs, including trenching, potholing, backfill, and repair or replacement of conduits, poles, risers, or pedestals.

Investigate and repair cut fiber optic cables or impairments.

Dig trenches and fill ditches; bury cable; place cable in trenches and through conduit.

Install equipment used to house HFC & FTTH equipment, ground plant, or place rod or wire to serve as a ground for future installations.

Collaborate with other Construction Technicians, in-house Technicians, and third-party contractors in performing their duties.

Perform traffic control and/or flagging as necessary.

Load and unload cable equipment and tools.

Read system prints and place cable according to prints.

Calculate signal losses from all cable lines and devices, using the signal level meter.

Adhere to industry-specific local, state, and federal regulations, as applicable.

Follow company policies and perform other duties as requested by the supervisor.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Skills/Abilities and Knowledge

  • Ability to read, write, and speak English.
  • Proficient in using hand tools such as electric drills, hammers, wrenches, screwdrivers.
  • Ability to walk over various terrains in all weather conditions while carrying tools and equipment, including gaffs, ladders, and fully loaded tool belts.
  • Safe use of weight-bearing equipment (e.g., gaffs, safety harnesses, ladders) within maximum weight limitations.
  • Proficient in using personal computers and software applications.
  • Accurately measure distances with tapes or other devices.
  • Ability to carry, climb, and operate extension ladders (approx. 32 ft high, 90 pounds).
  • Climb poles using gaffs, hooks, and climbing belts as needed.
  • Differentiate between different sizes, types, and colors of wires.
  • Make cable connections in tight spaces by bending, reaching, twisting.
  • Operate test equipment such as signal level meters and ohm meters.
  • Work from high places like poles and roofs.
  • Work standing 50-70% of the time.
  • Work with small components and wires for cable connections.
  • Use handheld communication devices and applications.
  • Adhere to local, federal regulations, and company policies.
  • Ability to dig in all soil types.
  • Drive company vehicles responsibly.
  • Operate machinery used for underground/overhead cable installation.
  • Prioritize and organize tasks effectively.
  • Read general system layouts from blueprints.
  • Work independently and in a crew.
  • Knowledge of fiber architectures, fiber plant maintenance, fusion splicers, basic mathematics, electronics, company products/services, NEC, NESC, OSHA.

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent work experience.
  • Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory record.
  • Commercial Driver License - Class A.
  • Industry/vendor-specific certifications (NCTI, SCTE, BCT/E) preferred.

Related Work Experience

  • 2+ years of construction work experience preferred.

  • Utility/Electrical/Telecom experience.

Education

  • OSHA 10, Electrical Training, NESC Communications 1910.268.

Related Work Experience

  • 1+ years in Utility/Electrical/Telecom fields.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Indoor confined spaces, poorly ventilated areas, attics, basements, crawlspaces, manholes.
  • Exposure to dust, dirt, noise, insects, rodents, pets, cleaning solutions.
  • Outdoor work in all weather and times of day/night.
  • Near power lines and electricity; at heights on poles.
  • Travel as required, including in inclement weather and weekly travel.
