Job description

GENERAL CONSTRUCTION LABORER

Perform tasks involving physical labor on construction projects. May operate hand and power tools of all types. May clean and prepare sites, dig, clean up rubble and debris, and many other tasks as required. Must be a hard worker, willing to do what he is told, willing to work overtime if required, and should have a general knowledge of the tools, equipment, and safety. Employee will be required to perform multiple types of work under the immediate supervision of his/her foreman. May assist other craft workers.

Responsibilities

  • Mop, brush, or spread cleaning solutions, or other compounds over surfaces to clean them or to provide protection.
  • Operate jackhammers and drills to break up concrete or pavement.
  • Place concrete or masonry structures.
  • Position, join, align, and seal structural components, such as concrete wall sections.
  • Grouting.
  • Shovel cement and other materials into portable cement mixers; and mix, pour, and spread concrete.
  • Signal equipment operators to facilitate alignment, movement, and adjustment of machinery, equipment, and materials.
  • Smooth and finish freshly poured cement or concrete, using floats, trowels, screeds, or powered cement finishing tools.
  • Tend machines that pump concrete, grout, cement, sand, plaster or stucco through spray-guns for application to ceilings and walls.
  • Tend pumps, compressors, and generators to provide power for tools, machinery, and equipment, or to heat and move materials such as asphalt.
  • Build and position forms for pouring concrete, and dismantle forms after use, using saws, hammers, nails, or bolts.
  • Clean and prepare construction sites to eliminate possible hazards.
  • Control traffic passing near, in, and around work zones.
  • Erect and disassemble scaffolding, shoring, braces, traffic barricades, ramps, and other temporary structures.
  • Grind, scrape, sand, or polish surfaces such as concrete, marble, terrazzo, or wood flooring, using abrasive tools or machines.
  • Load, unload, and identify building materials, machinery, and tools, and distribute them to the appropriate locations, according to project plans and specifications.
  • Mix ingredients to create compounds for covering or cleaning surfaces.
  • Provide assistance to other craft workers.
  • Other miscellaneous tasks as required.
  • This is a safety sensitive function.

Physical Requirements

  • Workers must be able to stand or walk for long periods.
  • Use arms and hands to reach for, handle and manipulate objects.
  • Lift and carry materials weighing 50 lbs frequently and up to 100 lbs occasionally.
  • Climb up and down ladders, scaffolds and other objects.
  • Carry tools and equipment.
  • Stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and see (naturally or with correction).
  • Employee must be physically able to lift 50 lbs without assistance. Employee will be required to traverse rocky terrain on a regular basis; good balance and steadiness is a critical requirement.
  • Employees will frequently be required to step onto and off of vehicles, platforms, and concrete forms.
  • Employee should not have a fear of heights.
  • Employee may be required to work in a confined area for a prolonged time period. Employee should not be claustrophobic.
  • Must have a can-do attitude.
