Job summary

Holt Brothers, Inc. is seeking a Construction Intern to support the project team in the field and office.

You will gain hands-on learning by observing field layout, quality control, safety practices, documentation, and coordination under guidance from the Superintendent and project engineering team. Responsibilities include assisting with daily field reports, punch lists, RFI/submittal tracking, and drawing markups.

Job description

The Construction Intern supports the project team by observing and assisting with day-to-day activities in the field and office. This role is designed to introduce students or early-career candidates to the construction industry, providing exposure to safety practices, field documentation, and project coordination under the guidance of the Superintendent and project engineering team. The Construction Intern gains hands-on learning experience while contributing to real project tasks.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this position. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, responsibilities and skills required of personnel so classified.

Field Exposure & Quality Control

• Observe and assist with field layout activities, learning how dimensional control is verified against drawings and specifications
• Shadow quality control inspections of installed work, gaining exposure to how deficiencies are identified and documented
• Help track and follow up on punch list items under supervision, learning the closeout process from identification to resolution
• Observe material verification and quantity tracking processes to understand how deliveries are checked against project needs

Documentation and Reporting

• Assist with daily field reports, photo logs, and general site documentation to build familiarity with recordkeeping standards
• Help maintain material and equipment tracking logs, learning how procurement and logistics are managed on an active site
• Shadow the project team on RFI and submittal tracking, gaining an understanding of how field questions and material approvals move through the process
• Support as-built documentation and drawing markups under the guidance of field staff

Safety

• Participate in daily safety huddles and toolbox talks to understand how safety communication happens on site
• Learn to identify and report safety observations and hazards, developing an eye for site risks under supervision
• Observe PPE compliance checks and general safety protocol enforcement across the jobsite

Communication & Coordination

• Attend project meetings and assist with meeting minutes to gain exposure to how project decisions and updates are communicated
• Shadow coordination efforts between the field team, subcontractors, and office staff to understand how information flows across a project
• Observe how site logistics (laydown areas, access routes, trade sequencing) are planned and adjusted in real time

GENERAL BACKGROUND AND MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education/Experience

• Currently pursuing an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field
• Strong interest in learning about the construction industry, strong attention to detail, and eagerness to learn
• Willingness to work on an active construction site in varying weather conditions
• Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn Procore, Bluebeam, Microsoft Project, and other software programs

Safety Requirement

• Willingness to comply with company and OSHA safety requirements
• Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) including hard hat, safety vest, safety glasses, gloves, steel toe boots, and other specialized equipment as jobs require.
• Current certifications for First Aid and CPR or willingness to obtain

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The Field Engineer regularly splits time between an office environment and active construction sites. The employee must be able to perform duties in each setting as project needs require:

• Walk across uneven terrain and active construction areas during site visits
• Climb ladders, scaffolding, and permanent and temporary stairways as needed
• Stand or walk for extended periods and navigate partially completed structures
• Bend, kneel, crouch, and lift materials or equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds
• Work outdoors in varying weather conditions and be exposed to construction noise, dust and vibration
• Sit for extended periods and use a computer, phone, and other office equipment
• Occasionally stand, walk, bend, reach, and lift office materials, weighing up to 25 pounds
• Review documents and construction drawings and communication in person, by phone, or virtually
• Specialty project locations (such as industrial facilities, healthcare environments, or restricted sites) may involve additional safety requirements or environmental conditions
