Job summary

The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company is offering an undergraduate internship to gain hands-on experience in the construction field. Interns will assist project teams across bidding to final completion, with assignments on office and job sites and possible relocation to remote sites.

The program runs 10–12 weeks at 40 hours per week, with housing provided in certain situations. Responsibilities include learning engineering and technical aspects in the field and office, performing quantity

Qualifications

• Undergraduate student pursuing a BS in an engineering discipline, engineering technology, or construction management.
• Experience with construction processes and document control is a plus.
• Wamiliarity with standard software tools used in project administration is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist project teams from bidding through final completion.
• Support office and jobsite activities; may relocate to remote sites.
• Perform quantity take-offs and basic field measurements under supervision.
• Review shop drawings and submittals; maintain logs and RFI records.
• Coordinate with subcontractors and suppliers; attend progress meetings.
• Assist with preparing billings, change orders, and invoices.
• Support document reviews and revisions of construction drawings and specs.
• Help with project closeout activities and punchlist items.

What It Takes

Open to undergraduate students interested in gaining hands-on practical experience in the construction field. Qualified applicants will assist project teams in managing construction projects/ including all phases from bidding to final completion.

• Assignments include office and job site; relocation to a remote sites may be required.
• Transportation is required.
• Work periods are 10-12 weeks; 40 hours/week.
• Housing may be provided in certain situations.

Intern Job Description

Reporting Relationship: Depending on the work assignment, interns will report to a project manager, superintendent, project engineer or field engineer. You may be assigned to the office, jobsite or mix of both.

Tasks Assigned: You will be learning the engineering and technical aspects of the project both in the field and in the office. Your experience will include some or all the following:

• Quantity take-off
• Layout
• Preconstruction/as-built surveys
• Shop drawing review/approval & maintenance of log
• Submittal review/approval & maintenance of log
• Request for information (RFI) review/submission & maintenance of log
• Responding to subcontractor RFIs
• Interfacing with subcontractors & suppliers
• Attending weekly progress meetings
• Assisting with coordinating the work between the owner, architect & subcontractors
• Assisting during the bid process
• Assist with reviewing construction documents & specifications
• Assisting with reviewing all document revisions & clarifications
• Assisting with maintaining field record

• Assisting with estimates/budgets/value engineering/constructability surveys Assist with writing contracts & purchase orders
• Assisting with preparing billings to owner & submitting change orders
• Assisting with approval of invoices
• Assisting with ordering & expediting materials
• Assisting with scheduling & updates
• Assisting with quality control & safety
• Assisting with settling contracts
• Assisting with permit process
• Assisting with performing costing, scheduling, estimating & project management
• Punchlist & project closeout
• Cooperating & working with field project management
• And any other duties that may be assigned

Education: Pursuing a Bachelor of Science in an Engineering discipline, Engineering Technology or Construction Management, Construction Technology.
