Who You Are:

Precision Systems is seeking to hire a Construction Inspector with knowledge and experience of construction standards and practices. The ideal candidate will have 3 – 7 years of experience performing construction inspection within Virginia that may include work for VDOT. The Construction Inspector will inspect all phases of highway construction and maintenance projects under the general supervision of senior or supervisory staff, ensuring construction quality in accordance with plans and specifications and providing a quality transportation system for the traveling public.

Responsibilities:

• Monitor the work of contractors to ensure quality control and contract compliance for roadway, structure, and bridge construction/maintenance projects of routine to moderate complexity, under the direction of a Construction Manager or designee on VDOT projects.
• Inspect and monitor contractual field work, including excavations, drainage facilities, road surfaces, and structures.
• Observe and document Contractor’s daily production rates.
• Schedule work and inspection phases with Contractor’s superintendent and agency personnel.
• Observe, document, and communicate with Contractor's regarding completion of all elements of project work, including identifying non-compliant work. Take field measurements of pay items.
• Review placement of and perform tests on construction materials.
• Review lines, grades, dimensions, and elevations using standard survey and field engineering equipment.
• Oversee and enforce the installation of erosion/siltation controls and highways work zones and traffic control devices.
• Recommend changes to construction plans to meet field conditions or provide project cost savings.
• Maintain project records, including daily diaries, materials notebooks, as-built plans, pay quantity records, and monthly estimates.

Qualifications:

The Construction Inspector is expected to have a minimum of three years of highway construction inspection experience as well as working knowledge of:

• Experience with roadway, structure, and bridge construction/maintenance/repair/rehabilitation methods, materials, standards and specifications.
• Knowledge of VDOT Road and Bridge Specifications, Road and Bridge Standards, Construction Manual, Inspector Manual, and Manual for Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
• VDOT Certifications related to asphalt, concrete, pavement, inspection or other areas required.
• Knowledge of Construction plans, symbols, and terminology.
• State and federal environmental, safety, and Equal Employment Opportunity guidelines and regulations.
• Use of the Department’s contract management software.
• Mathematics including algebra and geometry.

The Construction Inspector is expected to have the ability to:

• Functionally use computers, including familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite software and all construction management software systems used by the Department.
• Read and interpret roadway, structure and bridge plans and specifications.
• Apply mathematical formulas and field management principles to determine minor field adjustments.
• Maintain detailed records.
• Perform and document required materials testing.
• Communicate with agency and contractor personnel and the general public.

It is anticipated that the Department will require Construction Inspector positions with various combinations of certifications throughout the life of this contract. The specific certifications required for a given task will be identified by the Department at the time the task is assigned.

Completion of the Inspector Trainee program may substitute one year of experience.

Note: The rate for this Working Title/Class is subject to the Maximum Hourly Rate listed in the current Consultant Construction Engineering and Inspection (CEI) Classification Hourly Rate Pay Limitations Memorandum.
