Description

Summary

Construction Inspectors inspect, observe, and document construction and maintenance projects; performing tests on soils and materials. Work is performed under the supervision of a Project Engineer. In most cases, an Inspectors day to day direct supervisor may be a client's direct employee. Construction Inspectors have many categories that range from an entry level inspector to a senior inspector. All Inspectors are required to travel and be available to work in any part of the State, subject to change of assignments, as work requires. Inspectors must have a valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and be able to work night shifts when required.

Essential Functions:

1. Perform field inspections of construction and maintenance projects, existing roadways, structures, and facilities.
2. Conduct and observe tests on soils, asphalt, concrete, aggregates, bituminous products, metal products, and industrial coatings.
3. Respond to data requests.
4. Participate in traffic control activities.
5. Perform other duties as assigned.
6. Obtain the following VDOT Certifications:

• Soil and Aggregate Compaction
• Asphalt Field Level I & II
• Hydraulic Cement Concrete Field
• Pavement Marking
• Slurry Surfacing
• Flagger Certification
• Certification for Erosion and Sediment Control Inspection
• Stormwater Management (Inspector) Certification
• Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control
• GRIT (Guardrail Certification)

Obtain Nuclear Gauge Safety Training and 10 Hour OSHA Safety Training.

Complete the Inspector's Daily Report (IDR) documenting labor, equipment, and materials used daily.

Maintain daily progress photos of the work.

Fill out Force Account records for unresolved changes requiring work.

Maintain a Sketchbook with construction documentation.

Participate in reconciliation of pay quantities on progress payments.

Attend meetings as needed.

Participate in change order negotiations when appropriate.

Participate in CPM schedule meetings when appropriate.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED.

Valid driver's license.
