Job summary

Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Bridge Division seeks a Construction Inspector to join the Bridge Construction and Maintenance Branch. You will work with engineers to provide field support on state-wide bridge projects, inspect ongoing work, and mentor staff in testing procedures and material specs.

Responsibilities include data collection, travel to project sites, and ensuring compliance with plans and specifications while maintaining safety and quality standards.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; construction inspection/transportation experience preferred.
  • Experience as a Construction Inspector IV or higher with substitutions allowed on a year-for-year basis.
  • Substitutions for minimum qualifications described for Construction Inspector V with additional experience and education options.

Responsibilities

  • Perform engineering-related data collection, inspections, and analysis to support bridge construction and maintenance projects.
  • Ensure bridges and highway structures are built in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Interpret plans, negotiate with producers and suppliers to resolve differences, and document progress and issues.

Job description

  • Climbing - ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc

Oversees inspection of construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors perform structural repairs and build bridges and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications. This individual will act as a consultant regarding work progress and problem resolution, training, and support statewide oversight activities for bridge construction and maintenance projects.

Responsible to a licensed professional engineer who has full authority for final approval of all engineering-related work. Work requires contact with private entities to include contractors in support of district operations. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.

Essential Duties:
  • Performs engineering-related data collection, inspections, assessments, analysis, and review activities.
  • Ensures contractors build bridges and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Interprets plans and specifications and negotiates with producers and suppliers to resolve differences.
  • Is responsible for operations and works full-time at a geographically separated location.
  • Observes and inspects ongoing construction work.
  • Resolves differences in interpretation of plans and specifications.
  • Drives/travels to geographically separated fabrication plants/project sites to monitors program status; perform unannounced inspection of
  • operations, and problem resolution.
  • Documents work progress and issues arising throughout scope of project.
  • Mentors and develops technical employees in test and inspection procedures and material specifications.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Construction Inspector IV

3 years construction inspection or transportation engineering experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Required to wear protective gear such as respirators, hard hats, or other devices
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Climbing - ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc
  • Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
  • Crouching-bending body downward and forward by bending leg(s) and spine
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
  • Lifting-raising objects from lower to higher position/horizontally to a different position
  • Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
  • Visual Acuity-determine work quality/make general observations of facilities or structures

TxDOT’s Bridge Division is looking for a Construction Inspector to join the Bridge Construction and Maintenance Branch. This employee will work closely with others at Bridge Division and act as a consultant to Districts to provide field support on bridge maintenance projects and complex bridge construction projects around the state.
