Job summary

HNTB Corporation in Houston, TX is seeking a Construction Inspector to support the TxDOT SH 6 Widening project and future initiatives. You will perform daily inspections, document findings, verify contractor work against plans and specifications, and contribute to project quality and safety.

The role requires hands-on field work, the ability to interpret complex drawings, and experience with highway construction, earthwork, drainage, and bridges.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required plus 6 years of construction-related experience.
  • All required jurisdictional certificates and state requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects and documents work to ensure compliance with plans, specs, and schedules.
  • Verifies procedures and material conformity to specifications.
  • Performs on-site material testing and creates as-constructed sketches as required.
  • Maintains daily inspection logs and communicates discrepancies to Field Engineer.
  • Works various shifts including nights and weekends.

This opportunity is for the TxDOT SH 6 Widening Project in Bryan/College Station and potentially other future projects. The role entails being responsible for providing daily inspection of multiple, complex activities within a given discipline/trade performed by the contractor in order to monitor the project compliance with plans, specifications and other contract provisions. Maintains daily logs of inspection work which is assigned and reviews discrepancies or changes with Field Engineer. Performs non-routine and moderately complex assignments normally related to multiple and/or medium to large projects.

What You'll Do:
  • Inspects, observes, documents, and verifies work in progress by the construction contractor to ensure compliance with project schedule, contract documents, and plans.
  • Confirms procedures are followed and material used conforms to specifications.
  • Utilizes engineering inspection practices to perform complicated mathematical calculations and measurements of completed work to date.
  • Maintains Inspector's daily report of assigned work activities, contactor labor and equipment, quantity of material received and verified.
  • Performs on-site material testing and produces as-constructed sketches as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
What You'll Need:
  • High School Diploma/GED or equivalent and 6 years of construction related experience.
  • All required jurisdictional certificates and state requirements
What You'll Bring:
  • Recognizes, resolves, and/or escalates discrepancies or conflicts within documents.
  • Interprets and understands schedules to provide feedback.
  • Experience and understanding of TxDOT plans and specifications.
  • Experience inspecting typical TxDOT projects that can include earthwork, roadway, drainage, retaining structures, and bridges.
  • Understands standard testing requirements and methods used by TxDOT.
  • Operates relevant testing equipment for assigned duties.
  • Understands Microsoft Office Suite and other computer skills at an advanced level.
  • Calculates complex pay quantities.
  • Identifies, documents, and escalates change conditions.
  • Mentor/Mentee mindset.
  • Work will include periodic night and weekend shifts.
What We Prefer:
  • Range of experience 10+ years.
  • Proficient in Site Manager.
  • ACI, TxDOT soils and HMA, or NICET certifications.
