This posting is for an Engineering Technician II in the Smithfield Construction Office.

  • This position serves as a project inspector on roadway and structure projects supporting higher level technicians and engineers in the administration of construction contracts and/or District Office duties.
  • This position will be responsible for monitoring the contractor’s daily operations to ensure compliance with the contract, plans, and specifications.
  • Your duties will include observing and documenting the contractor’s operations, making measurements and calculations of pay quantities, and performing standardized material sampling and testing. The selected employee must be proficient in record keeping.
  • This position may require coordinating reviews of technical plans and drawings related to driveway permit applications, utility encroachment requests, subdivision design standards, and road addition packages.
  • You must be able to obtain and maintain certifications required for material sampling and testing.
  • You will work independently or as part of a team of NCDOT employees and consultant inspectors.
  • You will ensure compliance with NCDOT and external environmental agency erosion control and permit requirements. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Daily duties include maintaining inspector diaries, completing material reports, documenting pay records, performing construction calculations, and data entry via computer/iPad.
  • Effective communication with co-workers, contractors, and the public is essential. Basic math skills such as algebra, geometry, and trigonometry are required.
  • Knowledge of and skill in using Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) is necessary. Sound engineering judgment and adherence to safety standards are expected.

Applicants must demonstrate experience in:

  • Conducting routine inspections for compliance with contracts and standards
  • Planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently
  • Reading and interpreting construction plans and specifications
  • Performing mathematical functions including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry
  • Maintaining accurate records and reports, including data entry

Experience with IPads/tablets, HiCAMS, and SharePoint/SharePlus is highly preferred.

The role involves exposure to hazards like construction equipment, high traffic, heights over water or traffic, and outdoor conditions with varying weather. Moderate physical activity is required, including lifting up to 50 pounds, standing, walking, climbing, and kneeling. Night, weekend, and holiday work may be necessary. Must be able to legally drive a state vehicle and wear safety toe shoes.

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post-offer employment evaluation.

Qualifications include an associate degree in Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or a related field, plus two years of relevant technician experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. See oshr.nc.gov/experience-guide for details.
