Job summary

The City of Fort Worth Transportation & Public Works Department is seeking a Construction Inspector I to supervise and participate in the complete inspection of public works projects, ensuring conformance with plans, specs and contracts.

Responsibilities include establishing relationships with contractors, utilities, the public, and city staff; detailed daily progress reporting; and coordinating inspections and change orders with supervision.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Experience interpreting plans and specs for infrastructure projects; knowledge of paving/restoration and utilities; MS Office incl. Access/Excel/Word/Outlook/Acrobat Pro.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects work quality and materials for conformance with standards, codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Previews plans and specifications for the assigned project prior to inspection.
  • Prepares daily construction progress reports and progress pay estimates.
  • Observes work during progress and upon completion; ensures safety procedures; coordinates change orders with supervision.
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal and written communication with development community and City staff.
  • Coordinates inspection activities with other city departments, including utilities.
  • Performs preliminary and final inspections on routine projects.
  • Acts as liaison between contractors and the public.

A Construction Inspector I job is available with the City of Fort Worth Transportation & Public Works Department within the Capital Delivery Division. The selected candidate will be responsible for supervising and participating in the complete inspection of construction projects involving infrastructure installation, material testing, and concrete and asphalt paving for conformance with plan specifications and contracts. This individual will establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, utilities, the general public, and other employees. The Candidate should be a responsible, dependable, and extremely detail-oriented individual who is willing to learn.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Valid driver's license
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in the interpretation of plans and specifications in the construction of infrastructure projects
  • Experience with paving restoration, HMAC and Concrete, and underground utilities
  • MS Access, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat Pro skills
The Construction Inspector I Job Responsibilities Include
  • Inspects work quality and materials used in a variety of public works projects for compliance with building and construction standards and codes, ordinances and regulations
  • Previews plans and specifications for the assigned project prior to inspection
  • Prepare daily construction progress reports and progress pay estimates
  • Observes work during progress and upon completion. Ensures that safety procedures are followed. Coordinates change orders and advises contractors of changes in plans and specifications with assistance from a construction inspector supervisor
  • A strong interpersonal, management, and excellent communications skills with the unique ability to be able to transfer these concepts clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing with the development community and internal City staff
  • Coordinates construction inspection activities with other city departments, including gas, telephone, and electrical utilities and related operational areas
  • Performs preliminary and final inspections on routine construction projects
  • Acts as liaison between contractors and the general public with respect to various construction projects
Working Conditions and Physical Demands

Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically require touching, talking, hearing, seeing, grasping, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, repetitive motions, climbing, balancing, pushing, pulling and lifting.

Medium work - Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly having to move objects.
