TxDOT Fort Worth District is looking for a Construction Inspector I or II for the Wise County Area Office located in Decatur, TX. We are seeking highly motivated individuals to be part of our Construction team. As a Construction Inspector, you will be dealing with a wide variety of construction and maintenance projects related to roadway and bridges within our area. Inspects construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges, traffic signals, airports and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications; acts as consultant regarding work progress and problem resolution; may serve as the only inspector on a construction project or assist in overseeing construction inspection activities for very large and complex projects within a district or conduct statewide construction inspection activities for ongoing airport improvement projects. Responsible to a licensed professional engineer who has full authority for approval of all work. Work requires contact with contractors. May perform materials tests and manufacturing process inspections at fabrication sites. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Construction Inspector I - II:

  • Analyzes procedures to identify deficiencies and recommends improvements to management.
  • Attends pre-construction meetings and answers questions from contractors and other attendees.
  • Calculates payments due contractors for work completed.
  • Conducts project reviews and coordinates inspections with various inspectors and other district/division project managers.
  • Ensures contractors build roadways, bridges and related highway structures and/or airport improvements in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Monitors project phasing and traffic control plans or airport closure plans and ensures compliance with approved safety standards; inspects barricades; as required moves traffic control devices and barricades.
  • Observes and inspects ongoing construction work.
  • Resolves differences in interpretation of plans and specifications.
  • Documents work progress and issues arising throughout scope of project.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Additional Essential Duties for Construction Inspector II Include:

  • Coordinates inspection schedules, traffic control needs, and access issues directly with district personnel.
  • Advises supervisor of inspection activities and problems at plants and assists in coordinating inspections.

Minimum Qualifications:

Construction Inspector I:

  • Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
  • Experience: None Required
  • Licenses and Certifications:
    • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
    • 404: Mandatory: Safety Impact Certificate.

Construction inspector II:

  • Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
  • Experience: 1 year of experience in construction inspection, engineering support, maintenance and repairs, materials or process inspection; or transportation engineering support related experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.
  • Licenses and Certifications:
    • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
    • 404: Mandatory: Safety Impact Certificate.

Other Conditions:

In the Construction Division's Structural Unit, may require certification as a Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) Level II and/or Associate Welding Inspector (CAWI) awarded by the American Welding Society (AWS).

Construction Inspector I - II:

  • Applicable governmental laws, rules and regulations specific to area of responsibility for safeguarding information and information technology related systems
  • Construction engineering policies and procedures
  • Applicable inspection methods, procedures and techniques.
  • Applicable testing methods, processes and procedures
  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes
  • Reading and interpreting applicable plans, schematics, blueprints and maps
  • Performing calculations to include material and labor estimates, expenses, technical survey data and engineering calculations
  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others
  • Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems

Exercises logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; makes decisions that support business objectives and goals.

Additional Competencies for Construction Inspector II Include:

  • Applicable plans, specifications and estimates preparation, review, processing and compliance requirements
  • Methods for reviewing plans and specifications for compliance with requirements

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Construction Inspector I - II:

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour.
  • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 pounds at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 pounds
  • Balancing - walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
  • Walking - moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another.
  • Talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
  • Hearing - perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication

Close Visual Acuity - work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading

  • This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment forsafetyimpactpositions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
    • Please note that the Department of Transportation's Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation - 49 CFR Part 40, at 40.151(e) - does not authorize "medical marijuana" under a state law to be a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result for an employee in this position.

Additional Conditions of Employment for Construction Inspector I - II include:

  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for commercial driver and safetyimpact positions. Commercial drivers and safety impact employees will be subject to additional drug and alcohol testing during employment.
  • Required to work weekends and holidays.
  • Required to work hours other than 8 to 5.
  • Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.

Employee may be contacted during off-duty hours to see if he/she can report to work for emergency situations within 60 minutes, such as inclement weather events.
