Overview

The Multnomah County Department of Community Services, Transportation Division is seeking a full‑time Construction Inspector – Bridges (Engineering Technician 3). The role involves inspecting the construction of the county’s six major Willamette River bridges, ensuring compliance with plans, standards, and federal funding requirements while supporting project managers and contractors.

Responsibilities
  • Perform construction inspection of bridge and/or road projects, which may include reinforced concrete and structural steel installation, shop fabrication, paint, surveys, grading, surfacing, drainage, and other related work.
  • Maintain inspection records and prepare reports.
  • Lead the project quality and quantity documentation and closeout process.
  • Mentor and coach less experienced staff.
  • Coordinate and schedule day‑to‑day inspections, facilitating communication among county staff, consultant engineers, and construction contractors.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on construction standards, practices, laws, and regulations.
  • Review project plans and specifications.
  • Plan and administer multiple smaller projects or portions of larger projects.
  • Coordinate project safety and quality assurance functions.
  • Assist in developing standards and procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate degree from an accredited college with coursework in engineering, surveying technology, construction management, or a related field (equivalent training/experience may be considered).
  • Three (3) to six (6) years of increasingly responsible experience in public works bridge and roadway construction inspection.
  • Valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Federal‑aid project inspection and documentation experience.
  • Experience supervising or coordinating staff.
  • Bridge construction inspection experience.
  • ODOT certification in Bridge Inspection or General Inspection.
Benefits
  • Hourly position with a pay range of $40.27 – $49.52.
  • Schedule: Monday – Friday, 7:00AM – 3:30PM, with flexibility.
  • Union‑represented position eligible for overtime.
  • Location: Multnomah County Bridge Shop (1403 SE Water Ave, Portland, OR 97214) with optional ad‑hoc telework.
