Job summary

Qualifications

  • Engineering coursework or degree and/or engineer intern certification are acceptable alternatives.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of lower-level inspectors; organize and review their work.
  • Oversee field inspections, surveying, and documentation for roadway and bridge projects.
  • Provide guidance on Portland Cement Concrete Pavement, structural concrete, and Superpave asphalt pavement inspections.
  • Implement materials sampling and density testing procedures across project phases.
  • Schedule inspection activities to ensure contractor compliance with DOTD standards.
  • Review reports and calculations daily for accuracy and completeness.
  • Collaborate with contractors, utility companies, and local officials to minimize disruption.

Help ensure Louisiana’s road and bridge projects are built safely, accurately, and in accordance with DOTD standards, specifications, and contract requirements. Construction Inspectors support DOTD Project Engineers and higher-level inspectors by performing field inspections, materials observation, and construction documentation on active roadway, bridge, and drainage projects.

This is an outdoor, physically active role that may involve traffic exposure, varying weather conditions, extended workdays, night work, or changing schedules based on construction needs.

Positions are located in St Martin Parish, District 03 / Unit 233 and report to Construction Inspector Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Possession of a high school diploma or GED plus four years of experience in construction inspection or experience in the maintenance of public streets, roads, bridges, highways, or associated structures; OR
  • Six months of experience in sub-professional engineering, heavy mobile equipment operation, or mobile equipment maintenance plus four years of experience in construction inspection or experience in the maintenance of public streets, roads, bridges, highways, or associated structures; OR
  • Twenty-four semester hours in one of the following specialized fields: architecture, cartography, construction management, construction technology, drafting, engineering, engineering graphics, engineering technology, industrial technology, landscape architecture, math, or physics; OR
  • A bachelor's degree in engineering, engineering technology, construction management, or construction technology; OR
  • Possession of an engineer intern certificate.

LEADERSHIP AND INSPECTION OF CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS:
  • Serves as a lead worker by organizing, training, and reviewing the work of lower-level construction inspectors.
  • Conducts and oversees field inspections, surveying activities, and measurement documentation for roadway and bridge construction projects.
  • Provides guidance and training in the inspection of Portland Cement Concrete Pavement, structural concrete, and Superpave Asphaltic Concrete Pavement.
  • Implements and monitors materials sampling and density testing procedures throughout all phases of construction.
  • Assigns and schedules inspection activities to ensure contractor compliance with DOTD standards, specifications, and project requirements.
  • Reviews inspection reports, calculations, and documentation daily to ensure accuracy, precision, and completeness.
  • Collaborates with contractors, subcontractors, utility companies, and local government representatives to facilitate project progress and minimize disruptions to the public.
INTERPRETATION OF PLANS/SPECIFICATIONS AND DECISION MAKING:
  • Reviews construction plans and specifications before and during projects to ensure work progresses in accordance with DOTD standards and project objectives.
  • Resolves construction plan discrepancies and field condition issues encountered during project execution.
ENGINEERING CALCUATION AND DATA COLLECTION:
  • Performs engineering calculations, data collection, and layout work for roadway, bridge, and utility relocation projects, including preparation of daily reports and quantity documentation.
  • May be required to perform other duties as necessary including, but not limited to, emergency/disaster support activities.

Appointment Type: Promotion or Detail to Special Duty, open only to current permanent classified employees of DOTD.

Compensation: Additional $2.00/HR Premium Pay for Every Hour Worked
