Job summary

UNICO Engineering is seeking an experienced construction inspector in San Diego, CA to perform daily site inspections, document work, and coordinate with clients and stakeholders. The role supports Caltrans-aligned bridge and road projects with attention to plans, specifications, and safety standards.

Candidate should have 5+ years in transportation/structures/utilities, strong communication, and a clean DMV record.

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years of experience in transportation, structures and utility projects.
• Minimum 5 years of experience as a construction inspector.
• High school diploma or equivalent; college preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide daily inspections and complete documentation including daily reports and project photographs.
• Coordinate with clients/owners, other consultants, contractors, materials testers and other project stakeholders.
• Assist Resident Engineers and provide input on project schedule, change orders and communications with businesses and residents.
• Read and interpret project plans and specifications.
• Monitor construction for compliance with project documents, including material tags and certificates of compliance.
• Measure, document quantities of installed materials per client procedures.
• Inspect road and bridge construction per Caltrans standards, including grades, formwork, rebar, concrete tickets, curing.
• Communicate with project team and provide recommendations.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

• Provide daily inspections and complete documentation including daily reports and project photographs.


• Coordinate with clients/owners, other consultants, contractors, materials testers, and other project stakeholders.


• Assist Resident Engineers and provide input on project schedule, change orders, and communications with businesses and residents.


• Read and interpret project plans and specifications.


• Monitor construction for compliance with project documents, including collecting and checking material tags and certificates of compliance.


• Measure, calculate, and document quantities of installed materials in accordance with client policies and procedures.


• Inspect road and bridge construction (based on Caltrans standards), including checking grades, formwork, rebar placement, concrete batch tickets, curing methods, etc.


• Communicate with project team members and provide recommendations.


• Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

• Excellent communication skills.


• Working knowledge of MS Office Suite.


• Ability to use a computer to complete project documentation.


• Thorough understanding of CAL/OSHA practices and procedures.


• Bridge construction inspection experience required.


• Knowledge of Caltrans procedures and standards highly preferred.


• Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen.


• Clean driver's license and DMV record required.


• Education/Experience: Minimum 5 years’ experience in transportation, structures, and utilities projects; minimum 5 years’ experience as a construction inspector; high school diploma or equivalent (college preferred).
