Position Overview
We are seeking a Coatings Inspector to support industrial, infrastructure, and transportation projects throughout the New York and New Jersey market.
The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience inspecting protective coating and painting applications, with a NACE CIP Level 1 and/or SSPC coating inspection certification. This position will be responsible for ensuring coating work meets project specifications, industry standards, and client requirements from surface preparation through final application.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform inspections of surface preparation, coating application, and final coating systems.
- Verify contractor work complies with project specifications, approved procedures, and applicable standards.
- Conduct and document coating inspections, including:
- Surface cleanliness and preparation
- Surface profile
- Ambient conditions/dew point
- Wet and dry film thickness (WFT/DFT)
- Coating application and curing
- Holiday/discontinuity testing where required
- Review coating materials, technical data sheets, batch information, and application procedures.
- Identify deficiencies, document non-conforming work, and coordinate corrective actions.
- Prepare detailed daily inspection reports, testing documentation, and punch lists.
- Coordinate with contractors, project managers, engineers, owners, and other inspectors.
- Monitor coating activities to ensure compliance with project schedules and quality requirements.
- Maintain accurate inspection and testing records throughout the project lifecycle.
- Support quality assurance/quality control activities and project closeout documentation.
- Travel to project sites throughout New York and New Jersey as required.
Qualifications
- SSPC certification preferred; equivalent AMPP/SSPC credentials will be considered.
- 2+ years of experience in industrial coating, painting inspection, corrosion control, or related construction inspection.
- Experience inspecting coatings on bridges, infrastructure, industrial facilities, tanks, pipelines, marine structures, or other steel structures preferred.
- Working knowledge of coating inspection equipment and testing procedures.
- Familiarity with relevant NACE/AMPP, SSPC, ASTM, and project-specific coating standards.
- Ability to read and interpret project specifications, drawings, and coating systems.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to produce accurate inspection reports and maintain detailed documentation.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites.

- Bridge and transportation infrastructure projects
- NYSDOT or NJDOT projects
- Port, marine, or waterfront infrastructure
- Steel fabrication and structural steel coating
- Industrial or heavy civil construction
- Experience working alongside contractors and owners' representatives
- NACE/AMPP CIP Level 2 certification or willingness to pursue Level 2
