Job summary

Mott MacDonald is hiring a full-time Office Engineer for our Transportation team in North America to support the MTA Construction & Development program. The OE provides admin and technical support, acts as a Field Inspector, and ensures QA/QC across plans, specs, and codes.

Qualifications

  • Proficient with MS Office Suite of tools.
  • Working knowledge of Oracle Primavera Unifier or comparable project management system.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Administer the submittal and RFI process for assigned projects.
  • Maintain knowledge of standard processes and procedures; contribute to progress updates and monthly briefings.
  • Support management of project deliverables in Procore.

Mott MacDonald is looking for professionals to join our ever-expanding Transportation team to support our client, MTA Construction & Development (MTA C&D). We are currently looking for a full-time site Office Engineer with experience in the rail transportation and infrastructure industry. The successful candidate is required to have a strong understanding of the construction industry and experience working on public agency projects.

The Office Engineer (OE) is responsible for administrative and technical support activities related to program procurement and construction. The OE will also serve as a Field Inspector, providing quality assurance and continuous oversight of construction activities to verify compliance with the contract documents, approved plans and specifications, applicable codes, and MTA C&D requirements. Specifically, the OE manages varied project administrative functions, maintains contract records, plans and specifications, inspection documentation, and related engineering and administrative records, and provides overall support to the Project Manager's project implementation team.

The OE would ordinarily be responsible for maintaining full familiarity with plans, specifications, construction schedules, and contractor's plans on assigned contracts, Project Implementation Manual and, current safety regulations relative to assigned projects in order to be knowledgeable of the contractor's obligations and the Project Manager's responsibilities with respect thereto. The OE shall supervise subordinates in disseminating such information to the office and field staff as required to keep all pertinent Authority personnel accurately informed of relevant matters. The OE would work within the Project Manager's prescribed guidelines and procedures and serve under the direction of the Project Manager. The OE position requires very strong written and verbal communication skills.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Interpret construction documents to certify that work is performed in accordance with approved plans
  • Serve as a Field Inspector and provide continuous oversight of construction activities, workmanship, materials, and installation methods
  • Perform quality assurance inspections and document compliance with contract requirements, approved plans and specifications, applicable codes, safety requirements, and MTA C&D procedures
  • Prepare daily inspection reports, photographs, field notes, deficiency records, and follow-up documentation; promptly communicate nonconforming work and track corrective actions through resolution
  • Administer the submittal and Request for Information (RFI) process for assigned projects
  • Maintain a working knowledge of standard processes and procedures
  • Contribute to progress updates and performance metrics for monthly briefings
  • Support management of project deliverables in Procore
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion in performing duties
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with individuals with whom interface is required
  • Ability to maintain complex project controls, filings, and corresponding contract administration required record keeping
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
Candidate Specification:
  • Associate or bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, or a related field, with knowledge of mechanical systems
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience on infrastructure projects (transit or architectural) is required, including at least three (3) years in the transit or construction industry. Experience must include managerial or supervisory responsibilities such as directing office and field personnel, coordinating contractors and stakeholders, assigning and reviewing work, monitoring project performance, and supporting schedule, quality, safety, and contract compliance.
  • Working knowledge of engineering requirements, program policies and procedures including federal, state, and local transit administration regulations and policies
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite of tools
  • Working knowledge of Oracle Primavera Unifier or a comparable web-based project management information system
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as strong analytical technical writing skills are required.
