Job description

Story Construction is a 100% employee‑owned commercial/industrial general contractor, construction manager, and design‑builder with offices in Ames, IA and Sioux City, IA. At Story, we focus on having a good day, every day, regardless of your role. Everything we do revolves around building a joyful work environment and making a difference in the communities in which we work.

Position Summary

We are looking for Construction Management Interns for our summer 2026 internship program! In addition to being assigned a jobsite and mentor, all interns participate in a day‑long orientation, create an individualized learning plan, attend and lead site tours, and round‑out the summer presenting lessons learned to our Senior Leadership Team. As an intern, you will gain exposure to commercial construction through one of three ways: field‑focus, project engineer‑focus, or a hybrid of the two, based on experience.

Field

Field interns will work alongside a crew to learn while being in the work. Story provides learning opportunities within steel erection, concrete, and carpentry, depending on the phase of the project. Typically, individuals who are more novice within construction will be assigned to the field internship to lay a solid foundation prior to moving into project management. While most of your time is spent in the field, your internship will include mentorship and job shadowing opportunities with the project engineer on site.

Hybrid

A hybrid between the field and project engineer focus, your time will be split between working in the field and working alongside the project management team. Typically, the hybrid intern will have some construction experience under their belt; you will continue to learn the foundations of building, but you will begin to also get involved in project planning and the project management process.

Project Engineer

Most of your time will be spent with our project management team (project engineer, superintendent) and based out of the jobsite trailer. Your time will be spent learning about project planning and document control through processes such as requests for information (RFIs), submittals, Procore, and more to prepare you for a future career as a Project Engineer after graduation.

Qualifications

Must be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university program studying construction engineering, construction management, civil engineering, industrial engineering, industrial technology, agricultural engineering, building trades, or similar.

Travel: Some out‑of‑area and overnight travel may be expected. Interns may be assigned to jobsites across the state.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:

Employees may be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, vibration, loud noises, and more within OSHA standards. Employees may be exposed to outdoor conditions that include inclement weather such as heat, humidity, cold, wind, and dust. Must be able to lift and carry up to 30 pounds regularly and 50 pounds occasionally, stand for long periods of time, walk for moderate‑to‑long distances on varying surface conditions, climb, crawl, crouch, reach, grip, push, and pull without issue. Must possess adequate communicative, auditory, and visual capabilities to avoid safety hazards and help others do the same.

This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship or relocation assistance.
