Job summary

A leading construction firm in Portland, Oregon is seeking a Cost Engineer Intern to assist with detailed project estimates, coordination, and analysis. This role requires pursuing a degree in construction management or civil engineering, along with proficiency in MS Office software and an understanding of industry-specific tools like AutoCAD or Revit. The intern will perform quantity take-offs, manage quotes from subcontractors, and travel to client sites occasionally. Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a four-year degree program in construction management or civil engineering.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office software, particularly Word and Excel.
  • Basic knowledge of AutoCAD or Revit is advantageous.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Create detailed scope coordination documents utilizing 2D and 3D documentation.
  • Perform quantity take-offs using 2D and 3D software.
  • Connect 3D models with estimates directly.
  • Request and assemble detailed quotes from subcontractors.
  • Coordinate with estimating teams, designers, and owners.
  • Analyze historical cost data.
  • Travel to various client sites for work approximately 5% of the time.

The Cost Engineer is a primary team member helping to lead our preconstruction efforts. You are the key to the project beginning with success! This path leads to career in Preconstruction. This role includes the following: Quantity Take‑offs » Cost Estimating » Value Analysis / Best Value of Materials and Methods » Budget Tracking / Target Value Design » Constructability » Scope Definition for Trades » Trade Partner Selection » Trade Partner Buy‑out

  • Coordinates with project architects, designers, owners, and field personnel.
  • Responsible for Request for Information (RFI) and submittal process.
  • Acts as the “information hub” for project to office and field personnel to ensure continuity of work.
  • Offers technical information to project supervisor to ensure work complies with applicable codes, drawings, and specifications.
  • May coordinate change orders, expedite material and job site equipment, assist in preparation of estimates, and compile data to assist in analyzing project progress.
  • Monitor and track project quality control metrics and activities on a regular basis, provide timely and accurate quality reports, and raise issues to PM or Superintendent as appropriate.
  • Inspects all work to assure compliance with plans and specifications. Ensures project documents are complete, current, and stored appropriately.
  • Oversees performance of all trade contractors and reviews architectural and engineering drawings to ensure that all specifications and regulations are being followed.
Cost Engineer Intern Job Details
  • Author detailed scope coordination documents coordinated with 2D and 3D documentation.
  • Conduct quantity survey projects utilizing both 2D and 3D software.
  • Connect 3-dimensional models directly to estimates.
  • Request detailed quotations from subcontractors and assemble detailed estimates.
  • Coordinate with estimating team, designers, and owners.
  • Interview proposed subcontractors based on submitted proposals.
  • Organize and analyze historical cost data.
  • Travel approximately 5% of the time to work at unanticipated client sites.
Qualifications
  • Working to obtain a four‑year degree program in construction management, construction science or civil engineering.
  • Full knowledge of computer software, i.e. MS Word, Excel, Project.
  • Working knowledge of Autocad or Revit a plus.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
