Job summary

HNTB Corporation in San Antonio is seeking an Engineer in Training (EIT) to join our construction inspection team. The role focuses on field oversight to ensure adherence to plans, specifications, and contract provisions on major infrastructure projects.

You will coordinate quality controls, review RFIs and submittals, and support documentation with the engineer of record. This in-person position covers local counties in Texas and requires pursuing a Texas PE license within four years.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering is required.
• Experience with construction inspection or CEI/TxDOT projects is preferred.
• Engineer in Training (EIT) with exposure to digital construction tools is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Assist with construction field work to ensure conformance to plans and specifications.
• Coordinate and schedule quality control inspections.
• Observe on-site material testing and coordinate testing services.
• Compute quantities and perform basic accounting for payment estimates.
• Review shop drawings and ensure compliance with plans and specs.
• Read and interpret drawings to identify discrepancies.
• Review contractor daily reports for accuracy and completeness.
• Maintain progress reports and coordinate with the engineer of record.

This opportunity entails being responsible for providing engineering inspection and documentation of construction work performed by contractor, in order to monitor the project construction compliance with plans, specifications, and contract provisions, as well as state and local regulations in order to protect the client's interests. Responsible for assisting in the compliance and modification of design calculations, technical reports, engineering plans, specifications, and other contract documents for assigned projects. Responsible for reviewing RFIs, Change Orders, and Submittals. This position is for an EIT in the San Antonio Area. This position may require you to perform inspection/engineering services in the following 12 counties: Atascosa, Bandera, Bexar, Comal, Frio, Guadalupe, Kendall, Kerr, McMullen, Medina, Uvalde, and Wilson. Work assignments may include work with TxDOT, VIA, City and County entities. Work for this position does not include remote work. This position is in-person. Construction inspection work will include night work and weekend work. Other Conditions: Must obtain a professional engineering (PE) license from the State of Texas within (4) years of the date of hire and sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.

What You’ll Do

• Assists with construction field work tasks and activities on a project to ensure conformance to plans, specifications, and other contract documents.
• Coordinates and schedules quality controls inspections.
• Observes on-site material testing and coordinates testing and monitoring services.
• Performs mathematical calculations for material quantity payments.
• Performs basic shop drawing review and ensures that procedures and materials comply with plans and specifications.
• Read and interpret construction drawings and specifications and identify discrepancies or conflicts within the documents.
• Reviews contractor’s daily construction reports for accuracy, thoroughness and consistency.
• Regularly reviews contractor's as-built mark-ups, documents project progress using video and photo and prepares reports on construction progress.
• Consults with Resident Engineer on work progress and construction problems, proactively recommends solutions, assists in the resolution of issues, and acts as a liaison with the engineer of record.
• Remains current and knowledgeable of industry technology and tools used to perform inspection work through industry resources, training, and research.
• Gains exposure to new technology and utilizes it (GPS/Rovers) to increase efficiency and accuracy of inspection tasks.
• Performs office engineer work when needed including but not limited to; prepares meeting agendas and meeting minutes, assists in processing and maintains tracking logs for RFIs, submittals, pay estimates and other deliverables.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

What You’ll Need: Bachelor's degree in Engineering.

What We Prefer: Engineer in Training (EIT) Trained in digital construction management software such as Constructware, Asite or similar preferred. TxDOT or CEI experience. Site Manager experience. APCM experience. AutoDesk Construction Cloud (ACC) experience. Procore experience. ACI and Level 1B certifications Experience resolving and addressing RFIs, COs, and Submittals.
