We’re expanding our Construction Defect department and seeking a strategic, experienced, and hands-on Unit Manager to oversee a team of seasoned claims professionals and ensure our standards for technical excellence and client satisfaction remain industry-leading.

Job Description

Senior level claims position to oversee a unit of 5-8 people and their respective caseloads. Manage your unit's claim metrics and ensure they are current. Oversee all aspects of file handling on pending claims, including facts of loss, coverage analysis, investigation, negligence/compensability/liability determinations, damage assessment, and coordination of medical care as appropriate. Approve and monitor litigation management, settlement negotiations, and appropriate use of vendor tables. Establish and approve reserves as needed. Attend conferences, client meetings, mentor adjusters, and assist management as requested. Ensure files assigned to the unit are handled within state statutes, Client Claim Handling Guidelines, and NARS Best Practices. Other duties may include travel.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Supervise a unit of 5-8 claims professionals and their caseloads proactively.
  • Adhere to all file handling standards, NARS Best Practices, state statutes, and requirements necessary for passing audits.
  • Demonstrate commitment to the organization's mission and values.
  • Maintain confidentiality of client, company, and personnel information.
  • Work closely with Quality Assurance to meet company objectives.
  • Review and respond to claim appeals and grievances, investigate, and respond to complaints.
  • Follow company policies and procedures.
  • Lead by example to promote a culture of service and continuous improvement.
  • Provide leadership to achieve key business goals.
  • Assign accountability and hold adjusters to required deadlines.
  • Communicate clearly and provide adequate direction.
  • Track trends by program and unit.
  • Develop a strong understanding of the team’s clients and claims.
  • Manage corrective actions per HR guidelines.
Reserves
  • Oversee adequate reserving and quality claim handling.
  • Maintain diaries on pending claims.
Team Management
  • Handle performance evaluations, attendance, and personnel issues.
  • Conduct regular meetings to discuss goals and development plans.
  • Perform audits of adjusters’ files.
  • Analyze staffing needs and coordinate training and development.
  • Create individual development and training plans.
  • Coordinate HR functions regarding discipline.
  • Conduct monthly unit meetings.
  • Complete employee performance reviews timely.
Litigation
  • Coordinate claim settlements with carriers and reinsurers.
  • Manage activities of defense counsel.
  • Approve legal defense assignments.
  • Oversee litigation activities and reporting.
Customer Service/Contact
  • Ensure client satisfaction and claim review quality.
  • Handle miscellaneous duties and projects.
  • Notify carriers and reinsurers of large claims.
  • Resolve customer complaints and monitor satisfaction.
  • Follow up on client issues and action plans.
Review/Report
  • Conduct regular file reviews for trend detection.
Qualifications

Education / Licensing

  • High School Diploma or higher; 2-year degree preferred.
  • 10+ years claims and litigation experience, preferably in relevant lines.
  • 5+ years supervisory experience or similar.
  • Claims Designation (AIC, CPCU, SCLA) required.
  • Eligible for reserve/payment authority of $100,000+.
  • Ability to obtain Florida Adjuster’s license or other jurisdictional licenses.

Technical Skills

  • Interpersonal skills for handling sensitive situations.
  • Technical skills for litigation and settlement negotiations.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and data analysis.

Abilities

  • Willingness to travel, valid driver’s license, flexible hours.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Persuasion, presentation, and writing skills.
  • Availability 24/7 as needed.

Salary range for Claims Unit Manager – Construction Defect Team: $125,000 - $140,000, plus benefits and potential bonuses. Salary will be based on experience, skills, and location.
