Job summary

Hanover and King William Habitat for Humanity in Virginia is seeking a part-time residential construction support role. The assistant will work with the Construction Manager on day-to-day tasks of building affordable homes.

The role focuses on planning, materials management, supervising volunteers, inspections, and coordinating with homeowners and staff to ensure quality and timely progress.

Qualifications

  • Must be able to climb ladders and perform general construction tasks.
  • High School education preferred; residential construction experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Plan for construction of Habitat homes and ensure material readiness.
  • Manage materials, tools, inventory, and equipment on site.
  • Supervise volunteers and subcontractors; teach tasks to volunteers.
  • Schedule inspections and coordinate permits with local authorities.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings and liaise with directors as needed.

Job Summary: This position offers an excellent opportunity for an individual who wants to step into a part-time residential construction support role. The assistant will work directly with the Construction Manager on day-to day tasks of the construction of affordable homes as Habitat works towards their vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live.
Responsibilities:
Planning for Construction for Habitat Homes
  • Ensure that Habitat has the necessary tools and materials for construction
  • Help obtain certificates of insurance from all contractors
  • Assist homebuyer with materials selection as needed
  • Complete tasks as needed, including last-minute supply runs
Management of Materials & Tools
  • Maintain inventory & check quality of materials delivered to site and return rejects
  • Pick-up and appropriately store all tools and materials from site at end of project
  • Lock and secure job site
Supervise Volunteers and Sub-Contractors
  • Coordinate the work of volunteers and sub-contractors
  • Teach volunteers how to complete the necessary tasks
  • Involve the future homebuyers in the construction process, work with regular volunteers
  • Assure that all work done is high quality and completed in a timely manner
Inspections
  • Call and schedule appropriate inspections, be present for inspections as needed
  • Communicate with local government to complete permitting
  • Ensure that all punch list items are completed correctly and in a timely manner
  • Train new homebuyers on routine home maintenance
Additional Responsibilities
  • Attend weekly staff meetings on behalf of construction staff as needed
  • Act as liaison between construction, Director of Family Services and Director of Community Engagement as needed
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
  • Must be able to lift 60 pounds
  • Must be able to climb ladders
  • Must be able to perform the normal scope of construction work
  • High School education preferred
  • Some experience in residential construction preferred
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Schedule & Pay:

This is an hourly position, part-time. The schedule is generally Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, not to exceed 24 hours a week. Pay commensurate with experience, expected range of $18-23 per hour.

In person, with current projects in Doswell, Beaverdam, and Mechanicsville. Mist be able to commute to any part of Hanover & King William Counties.
