As our Construction and Maintenance Hatchery Utilities Maintenance Mechanic, you will provide skilled experience in the operation of heavy equipment, while expanding your knowledge of hatchery construction, operation, and production processes.

This is an opportunity to support a team of construction professionals who specialize in the construction, installation, and maintenance of critical hatchery production components that help sustain Washington’s fish populations and enhance recreational and commercial fishing opportunities.

What to Expect-

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Construction and Maintenance Hatchery Utilities Maintenance Mechanic will:

Perform Plumbing Tasks:

  1. Install, maintain, and repair valves, control gates and various types of supply and drain pipe - such as PVC, HDPE, steel, and ductile iron.
  2. Install water towers, formalin systems, fish rearing ponds and domestic water systems.
  3. Perform inspections of water mains, fixtures, and valves to determine need for maintenance and repair.

Operate Heavy Equipment:

  1. Safely operate construction and earth moving equipment such as, but not limited to: Excavators of various sizes; Wheel loaders more than 80 net flywheel horsepower; Rubber tired loader/backhoe combination 51 net flywheel horsepower or more; AWD Telehandler (off-road forklift).
  2. Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, sketches, and specifications.
  3. Operate electronic grade control systems to determine, correct, or maintain grade/elevations.

Drive Trucks:

  1. Operate trucks and trailers of all types and sizes to transport materials, equipment.
  2. Operate vehicles rated at 80,000 Gross Combined Weight (GCW) or more, including semi-tractor/trailer equipment.
  3. Direct or participate in loading and unloading equipment, material, or supplies.
  4. Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspection of vehicles and trailers to ensure safe operational order and report maintenance or repair issues.

Assist in Welding and Fabrication:

  1. Assist in the welding and fabrication repairs to various metal structures.

Working Conditions:

Work Setting, including hazards:

Duties are performed at construction sites in the Hatcheries and Wildlife areas and on occasion in an office setting. Hazards include working on rough terrain, riverbanks, slippery slopes, and other surfaces, confined and difficult to reach spaces, and in all types of weather conditions, including extreme heat, rain, or snow.

Bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, pushing, pulling, and lifting 50 pounds repetitively periodically throughout the workday and when loading and unloading trucks or moving materials around project site. Operate motor vehicles in hazardous weather conditions such as snow and ice while on mountain passes, highways, and roads (both paved and unpaved).

Schedule:

Typically, 6:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday – Thursday, and work additional hours as needed/requested. This may include overnight stays and evening and weekend work.

Travel Requirements:

Travel required 70-90% depending on the season.

Tools and Equipment:

Basic hand tools, power tools such as drills, roto hammers, cut off saws, circular saws, metal band saws, welders, cutting torch, chainsaws, concrete cut-off (hot saw) and/or powered motors, automotive equipment, and trailers.

Customer Interactions:

Frequent interactions varying between Federal, Local, Inter-Agency, and Intra-Agency customers and vendors.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

Four (4) years of general work experience in building and equipment maintenance, construction or repair work OR completion of a recognized apprenticeship in a skilled mechanic trade.

AND all of the following:

  1. Three (3) years of experience operating heavy equipment, such as excavators, dozers, and backhoes.
  2. Three (3) years of experience with underground utilities infrastructure installation/repair.
  3. Experience operating heavy construction equipment in a safe and skillful manner.
  4. Experience adjusting and making repairs to equipment.
  5. Experience in the installation and repair of industrial plumbing components.
  6. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches and verbal instruction and order parts, materials, and equipment.

Knowledge of:

  1. Rules of safe operation of equipment.
  2. Motor vehicle laws.
  3. Methods, tools, and materials used in servicing and maintaining heavy equipment.

Certifications/Licenses:

  1. A valid driver’s license recognized by the state of Washington and acceptable driving record.
  2. Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) endorsement with current Medical Examiner’s Certificate.

Preferred Qualifications:

In addition to the required qualifications, our ideal applicant will possess the following:

  1. Boom Truck Qualification.
