Buchalter is seeking an experienced Conflicts Attorney to support the Risk Management Department in analyzing and resolving conflicts of interest for new business and hires. The role involves centralized conflicts review, ethical wall considerations, and onboarding clearance for all new matters.

Qualifications

  • J.D. required.
  • Licensed to practice in one of the listed states or eligible.
  • Minimum 8–10 years’ experience performing conflicts analysis in a large law firm.
  • Familiarity with Intapp Open; experience with 3E, iManage, Intapp Walls preferred.

Description

This position supports the Risk Management Department ("Department") in responding to all conflict check requests submitted firm wide, including requests related to existing and potential new clients as well as requests related to new hires, external publications, and requests for proposal. As a member of the Conflicts Analysis Team, the Conflicts Attorney facilitates centralized conflicts analysis for new business requests, and as needed, with the conflicts of interest onboarding process (including conflicts analysis, ethical wall construction, and screening) for all new hires.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review and provide thorough and timely analysis of new business intake materials and information in order to identify ethical and business conflicts of interest and ensure completeness, accuracy and adherence to firm conflicts and risk management procedures.
  • Use available internal and external databases, and communicate with firm lawyers with respect to clients and new business and follow up on all potential conflicts of interest.
  • Drafting and reviewing conflict waivers and other documentation for firm lawyers.
  • Proactively communicate with the Director of Risk Management on complex conflicts questions and other compliance issues.
  • Review and provide thorough and timely analysis of all outside counsel guidelines and communicate with firm attorneys, the Client Engagement Management Team, and the Director of Risk Management to resolve potential issues.
  • Respond to attorney questions regarding potential conflicts of interest, conflict waivers and new business intake policies and procedures.
  • Maintain thorough, accurate and current records of all conflicts resolutions in database to ensure integrity of the database and to assist in the identification and clearing of future conflicts of interest.
  • Investigate and resolve erroneous, outdated or otherwise incomplete data on conflicts reports and ensure corrections are made in the database and in other records to ensure integrity of information.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of legal ethics and professional responsibility rules related to lateral attorney and new matter conflicts of interest as well as relevant procedures, policies and practices.

Education & Experience
  • J.D. required.
  • Licensed to practice and in good standing in one of the following states: California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Georgia, Tennessee or Illinois.
  • Minimum of 8-10 years’ experience performing conflicts analysis in a large law firm required.
  • Familiarity with Intapp Open required.
  • Experience with 3E, iManage, and Intapp Walls preferred.

Pay Scale: The reasonably expected pay scale for this position is $160-$220k. This is an employer estimate and the salary offered within that range, and the potential for bonus and bonus amount, will depend on candidate’s years of practice and experience and performance.
