Job description

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The Assistant Teacher collaborates with the Lead Teacher to ensure the delivery of direct cross-component services as defined in Head Start/Early Head Start Performance Standards to children in their unit. They share responsibilities with the Lead Teacher for record keeping, classroom management, and design, following NAEYC guidelines and the High/Scope Curriculum. They are also responsible for supervising and training direct service staff and volunteers in their classroom.

QUALIFICATIONS ESSENTIAL:
  1. Associate degree in Early Childhood Education or a closely related field
  2. At least one year of experience working with preschool children
  3. Ability to communicate verbally
  4. Ability to communicate in writing
  5. Current driver’s license
  6. Complete a criminal record check from the Department of Health & Welfare’s Criminal History Unit prior to hire
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ESSENTIAL:
  1. Treat participants, fellow staff, and community members with positive regard.
  2. Follow a prescriptive schedule that allows adequate preparation for each class.
  3. Follow a schedule that provides sufficient time for daily evaluation.
  4. Ensure adequate break times during the day.
  5. Collaborate with center staff to maintain an inviting and nurturing environment that reflects the local community and participating families' cultures.
  6. Assist the Lead Teacher in supervising classroom staff and volunteers, providing training and ongoing evaluation.
  7. Observe and document each child's developmental level, using appropriate tools and information from parents, staff, and professionals to develop individualized plans.
  8. Help the Lead Teacher set up a classroom schedule aligned with the High/Scope curriculum, incorporating cultural representation.
  9. Plan, implement, evaluate, and modify child activities and daily classroom routines involving staff and volunteers.
  10. Collaborate with staff to recruit, train, and support parent and community volunteers.
  11. Share current information with parents regarding child progress and challenges.
  12. Assist with recruitment activities as assigned by the Center Supervisor and Lead Teacher.
  13. Develop procedures for health checks, dental care, and fluoride use in the classroom.
  14. Plan and implement individualized health and nutrition education.
  15. Coordinate with the cook for classroom food experiences.
  16. Participate in ongoing education, including CPR and First Aid training.
ADDITIONAL:
  • Advocate for Head Start/Early Head Start children and families within the community.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
