Job description

The Huisken Lab at the University of Göttingen is looking for a

The interdisciplinary laboratory with expertise in optics and developmental biology contributes significantly to the development of powerful light sheet microscopes for recording dynamic processes in living biological samples. The laboratory’s own ‘Flamingo’ microscopes enable completely new types of collaborative microscopy projects. Efficient data management and customized image processing are essential for the successful implementation of scientific projects.

The position is full-time (currently 39.8 hours per week) for an indefinite period. The salary is paid according to pay group 11 TV-L.

Your tasks
The area of activity includes project-related IT tasks, including:

  • Setting up and managing fast network infrastructure for image data transmission, storage and processing via fiber optic connections and 10G copper lines in coordination with the GWDG university computer center
  • Setting up new and managing existing Linux-based servers and clients
  • Management of a BeeGFS file system on local servers and clients
  • Management of virtual machines for image data processing via VNC connections
  • Management of computer hardware in mobile microscopes and their remote control
  • Setting up reliable image data storage and backup on GWDG servers
  • Management of the local network: network connections, switches, local MAC and IP addresses, VPN rights, printers
  • Support of computers in the client-server area as well as user-individualized supply with software
  • Supporting employees with programming (Python, Java, C++) for hardware control and image processing
  • Setting up, converting and maintaining all systems (Mac, Linux, Windows) and the associated software
  • Creating computer configurations for the various user requirements and organizing purchases
  • Researching and testing new software and hardware potentially useful for the laboratory
  • Integrating new hardware such as 3D printers, cameras, robots and motors together with other employees
  • Software license management
  • Advising users on software and software installation and on software and network security
  • IT specialist responsible to the GWDG, thus first point of contact for the GWDG.
  • Thorough documentation and presentations of all work in English, understandable for non-specialists
  • Consultation with and representation of colleagues from other departments

Your profile

  • Completed studies in computer science, a related subject or proven equivalent skills and experience acquired through many years of relevant professional activity
  • Alternatively, completed university studies in a research field (physics, biology or similar) with sound experience in setting up and managing IT systems
  • Excellent knowledge of setting up and managing servers and computers under Linux, especially Ubuntu
  • Excellent knowledge of fast network technology (Ethernet, VLAN, DNS, DHCP, firewall, etc.), especially network switches (fiber optic and copper)
  • Excellent knowledge of Python and automation via script
  • Advanced knowledge of Java, Matlab, CUDA and experience in managing MacOS devices desirable
  • Experience in electronics, signal and image processing desirable
  • Very high level of comprehension, motivation and the ability to organize and carry out tasks independently
  • High level of interest in scientific issues
  • Friendliness and strong ability to work in a team in an international and cosmopolitan setting
  • Very good written and spoken German and English skills
  • Ability to work independently, team spirit and flexibility
